Some foolowup info...

Well I tried hooking up my newly constructed shuttle lounge room PC, and it should be noted that moving the box out from under my desk to the open lounge room reduced temperatures by about 6 degrees. I also replaced the Sunon Fan with a Nexus 80mm fan, and whilst the Nexus is a lot quieter at the sa...

Passive Geforce 6600

I have a Gigabyte N66256DP video card. It's a heatpipe passively cooled vanilla GF6600 card with 256MB ram. I purchased it because it seemed the perfect solution for my HTPC. It has the new .11 micron core and plenty of ram, low profile to fit inside a shuttle, plus enough grunt to emulate my old PS...

FSB and Memory Frequency

I suppose this isn't so relevant to the original question, but regarding the relationship between cpu bus frequency and memory frequency, it depends upon the implementation of the memory controller. On some of the older boards it was possible to run slower memory with a faster FSB processor. For exa...

Ok guys....thanks for the replies. I haven't had much experience with modern cpu coolers for sockets. I'm still stuck back in the slot days. If the processor really is that cool, then why do they put a stupid stock fan on it when it's supposed to be a quiet product? Why not just ship it with a large...

VIA C3 Nehemiah

Just wondering if the EPIA-M boards support an easy way of underclocking the C3. I know it sounds funny, but I'd like to get one of the new Nehemiah core based C3's with an EPIA-M and possibly undervolt it/clock it down to 800 or so to reduce heat.

Is it possible?

Slot 1 CPU's

As far as I know, if your motherboard is Slot 1 and supports 100mhz FSB you'll be able to use quite a few models of P3's. If your motherboard can support 133mhz FSB (which would be considered overclocking in those days) even better! When Intel introduced the coppermine chips, they made a few variant...

Why don't I relocate my computer 100 feet away from my desk? Well besides the fact my parents would never stand for cable running the length of the house, it seems like an ostrich type of approach to me.

There's just no challenge!

Oh sure Mike, the rocket drive would be a perfect application for this, though it is still somewhat expensive. Perhaps when prices come down I will get one of those babies. Diskless setups booting from a network server would be great for a household of users, just like the old unix xterminals, but i...

Solid state storage for entertainment PC

I've been entertaining the idea of a pc using solid state drives for many months now. I've been planning to construct a home entertainment pc to play DVD's, emulate games via Arcade & SNES emulators etc and maybe play music too. I'll most likely be using Via's EPIA-M boards for this if I do eventual...

I recently suspended my Baracuda II under the drive cage of my case where I have two Panaflo 80l's at 5 volts blowing air in. I also attached some smallish heatsinks to each side of the hard disk, where apparently the most heat is produced. As a result, the disk is 5-7 degrees cooler than before. SM...

I'm inclined to agree with Rusty's suggestion. All the components in my system are over 2 years old and the smell has only occurred since I introduced the Zalman fan. It could be that something else was cooking, but when I inspect the system, it is definitely the Zalman fan that smells bad and every...

Smelly Zalman Fan

A number of months ago I did some modifications to all the fans in my computer to provide adequate airflow with much less noise. This included replacing the old noisy cpu fan with a Zalman fan bracket fb123 and a Zalman 92 mm fan. Shorlty afterwards, I became aware that my computer was producing a n...

You could try Sunon fans. I've only had one but from experience it was pretty good in terms of airflow to noise ratio. It was a 80x80x25 fan, apparently 50cfm at 40db at 3900 rpm. Even at 5 volts it was a bit noisy for me as you might imagine, but a good performer nontheless, and always started at 5...

I've been messing around with fans a lot just lately in my quest to silence my computer. Well it's not silent but it's very quiet all the same. I just need to add a Baracuda 4 sometime and it'll be to my liking. My aim has been to maintain normal level of cooling and reduce noise.

So, I've ...

The original fan that came with my ASUS V7700 video card (GF2 GTS) was noisy as buggery. I removed the old heatsink and replaced it with the center section of the original heatsink that came with my slot A athlon (which I hacked up). I have a 92mm Panaflo on a bracket over it. Nice and quiet and wor...
