Re: $1500 computer desktop speakers?

Moderately interesting design, but doesn't seem to be biamped, nor to use DSP. IMO, that's giving up a lot of potential in 2016. I'm skeptical that this will even match the Vanatoo.

Re: Linkwitz Orion speaker project

1. High volume -- I enjoy this best, but can't or don't do it for that long, perhaps 90 minutes at most. The peaks don't quite reach 90 dB @ 2m. Good thing you're working on those 400W amps! :D For example, the Seas W22EX-01 is 88 dB/1w/1m. It's only being asked to drive less than half the frequenc...

Re: Two Amp Projects: 8x100W DIY & H/K 770 Restoration

Thanks for the details. Very impressed by the Rotel - it's lower than I'd have guessed.

Also, this sounds completely legit:
Leaving it plugged in and looking at the energy draw (kwh) over a longer set time period at specific volumes would probably give more relevant info.

Mike, just out of curiosity, have you measured power consumption for any of your amps? Seems that the switchers should be MUCH better, but this is SPCR - we like numbers.

I also have a set of 250-ohm DT-880s. As noted above, sensitivity is low. They sound fine on the Clip, just not loud. 32-ohm version might be better here. 880s also have a hellacious peak around 9KHz. I notice it mainly on cymbals in jazz, when it drives me crazy. If you listen to much classical, be...

This discussion made me go back to Linkwitz's pages, and this one 's proven interesting. He links here , where you can find a lot of info about bass patterns & dipole & cardioid woofer setups. One thing's clear: you could begin experimenting & measuring with only $500 or so. Anyhow, while I find ext...

At the opposite end are speakers that clearly start to compress as the volume goes up... Soundstage's NRC measurements show this, though only the difference between 70 & 90dB. Interestingly, such tests are far more common for subwoofers (e.g., Data-bass, Audioholics). She'd kill me & lever leave me...

Re: MikeC's Audio Craft: An Introduction

Thinking about how to achieve cardioid bass dispersion in a speaker system without all that signal manipulation, one way would be to take a modified open baffle dipole like the Orion H frame, and absorb the back wave -- lose it in something like a massive absorbent box made of concrete. You are one...

Re: MikeC's Audio Craft: An Introduction

There were discussions in the past about Live End Dead End rooms -- in which one end of the room is fully padded to absorb as much acoustic energy as possible -- and the rest of the room is live. Some favored using speakers on the live end, others on the dead end, and some advocated either, dependi...

Subjective vs Objective? Audible, significant differences

When I see discussions of high end audio equipment, I can't help but be reminded of the commentary from Ethan Winer and Co with regards to subjective A/B test of related equipment, and the information bias of human perception when it comes to audio 'preferences'. The part at the beginning about the...

Subjective vs Objective? Audible differences in hifi

Let me begin by agreeing with MikeC: good amps exhibit only minor audible differences. This is not a magic technology. I would never use the ATI amps. Too big, too ugly, too inefficient. ATI makes truly excellent amps IMO (the relay-free protection system is tops), but these are fair comments. A few...

Neoseeker posted an Asus versus MSI roundup without much info about noise & power draw. However, their overclocking results are quite interesting. Re: Blowing hot air from radiator into the case

Is it a good idea? It's not theoretically ideal, but it can be effective in practice. Call it an option to consider and test. The controlling factors are your case's layout, heat load & airflow. My first WCed experience is detailed here . Full load eventually increased water temps to +11C, while air...
