I can confirm that this works. I have the same card as Ed, the MSI nx6600gt-vtd128, and I followed the instructions given in the first post.

I agree about not dismissing it too quickly. I think of it as a passive cooler where you get heat removed from the case for free. It may not be much, but its more than the Zalman. That said, its probably not as efficient as the Zalman to begin with.

I have heard that switching to an external sound card, such as the Soundblaster Extigy or some of the new Soundblaster Audigy products can be very effective because it removes all sound circuitry from the EMI mess inside a case. I can't remember my source on this, so don't go buying one of these pro...

I've had a PIII-733 that had a fanless heatsink for years. Its not a regular socket cpu, its one that sticks out perpendicular from the motherboard, pointing the cpu at the front of the case. Because of this, its never even had direct airflow over it. I revived it this winter for a folding@home mach...

I really like this design, I just don't trust ThermalTake to pull it off very well. I also wonder about the impact of the cable on the external heatsink. It's hard to the spacing, but a DVI cable might create a dead spot for airflow.

To play Devil's advocate.... I don't think I would go with a setup like this. I haven't watercooled, so you can take what I say with a grain of salt. With watercooling, there shouldn't be that much variance in temperature, assuming that changes in ambient temperature aren't great. In that situation,...

Did you plug the fanmate into the motherboard and still hear clicking? The most recommeneded solution is to to use a fanmate on the motherboard fan header, and adjust your speed that way.

A lot of what goes on at SPCR goes hand in hand with energy efficiency. Undervolting, laptop drives, high efficiency PSUs and smart component selection all reduce a computer's power draw, which can become considerable. For me this is another motivation to silence my computer.

This is the setup I have, and its not a major problem. My two points are that the clip is small and that makes it hard to work with; I used a hacksaw but I wished I had a dremel. Also, you don't need to remove much. I cut through the outer holes since it was less work, and so I couldn't slip and cut...

I took a Thermaltake 6Cu (copper core, Al fins--horrible purchase from my pre-SPCR days) and took the fan off and glued it to my ti4200. The fins are actually decently spaced for passive cooling. I also opened up the drive bays under the card to improve the cooling. I could tell that temperature wen...

This may not be the advice you're looking for, but what about a laptop (2.5 inch) hard drive. It'll be silent and produce less heat, and can be decoupled. Then you could get an external drive for large storage.

Anyone else using Powerstrip or Coolbits to underclock their video card? I've got a GeForce 4 ti 4200 128MB card.
