I've posted some pictures of my build (A NB47J combined with a VF700ALCU). A bit tight! http://medlem.spray.se/ragnarroos/ The closeness of those two coolers might actually be a good thing. Since the nForce4 chipset gets quite hot (from what I've read anyway), the "free" airflow from the VF700 fan ...

Don't have any useful advice to add, but I'll mention that I run SATA drives off both an Intel integrated controller (ICH5R) and a Silicon Image controller (built into my motherboard - not a seperate PCI card). The ones on the Intel controller show up as normal IDE drives, while drives on the Silico...

So can I ask you - is there anything I am supposed to do to safely shut down the sata device, the equivalent of the 'safely remove hardware' applet? Now that I think of it, that 'safely remove hardware' applet is not just for USB; on my laptop, I can 'stop' the CD ROM drive, since it's removable al...

Worst things you've broken in the quest for silence?

I can name 2 things from the past week: - A Pentium 4 2.4C. I'd already lapped it, but that wasn't enough. No, I just HAD to try removing the heatspreader. It came off alright, but let's just say pieces of the core came off with it. - A Radeon 9800 Pro. I removed the fan from my Arctic Cooling VGA S...

I've done this before (but on the Windows client) and the work wasn't lost. The old unit will just get sent when the current one finishes. If you'd prefer to send it straight away, try the command line option "-send all".

This looks VERY promising. We're likely to exceed 20,000 points for the second day in a row, so this isn't a mere fluctuation. I have the "blue text" problem as well, and as that screenshot demonstrates, it makes things very hard to read! It was white when I first installed the client but I'm not sure what happened to change it.

If it wasn't for the risk of landing a Tinker, I'd try reinstalling.

With no sign of resistance from AnandTech, we're headed for 25th place before March. Our gap with MacOS X has also closed to under 10,000 points.

A kick ass performance however you look at it!

That would work from an electronics point of view, but you might burn out the resistor. To calculate whether this is safe, you'd need to find out the power consumption of the fans, and the rating of the resistor. The 4 color bands on the resistor only tell you resistance/tolerance. I have these fans...

SPCR's reference fan is the 80mm Panaflo L1A. It's widely available, cheap, undervolts well and has quiet bearings. It isn't necessarilly the best in any one of those categories, but it's a great all-rounder.

Also consider the Nexus and AcoustiFan if you can find them.

I haven't tried stealth fans myself, but people here don't think very highly of them. Some good alternatives to try are (in no particular order) the Papst 4412, AcoustiFan, Panaflo L1A, Evercool (a bit louder than the rest but has more airflow) and Enermax adjustable. Nexus, who make a good 80mm fan...

They're controlled by temperature...but since an increase in power load causes an increase in heat produced, you could say that power load affects fan speed indirectly.

The extra wire probably doesn't do anything. 3-wire tails can't cost that much more than 2-wire ones so your supplier/shop would've just given you whatever they had around at the time. As for the fan, both the -BX and the -A versions have a 3-pin socket; it's the circuit board inside that's different.

When the regular statistics (like PPW compared with MacOS X) aren't looking so good, it's time to..."invent" some new measures such as the following: Team loyalty (or dedication) : The percentage of users that are active. A low loyalty stat means a lot of people join a team, fold a bit, then get bor...
