Since Oblivion has been mentioned quite a bit in this thread, this is a nice comprehensive benchmark: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2746 I have a 7600GT atm and it's running nice and cool, and has decent performance in Oblivion (1024x768, mediumish settings, HDR enabled). Here's a gem that may be of interest: attaching a tube from the water inlet (inside the reserator) to bring the warm water to the top does work a 3 ceclius miracle when nothing else has changed, and is not any more noisy Hehe, that's pretty funny ;) That was actually the first thing I thought about...

I now own one of these drives, a 120G 8meg cache model.
Haven't yet had the possibility to thoroughly check the noise level of the drive yet, but the first subjective impression i that it is fairly quiet. No whining idle noise.

I am also very interested in the noise level of these drives. Thinking about buying one of them, matrox claims a 2.5bel idle noise and that sounds quite good. But i have actually seen some conflicting measurements. An Extremetech review placed it ~2dB higher than the IBM 180GXP and about equal with ...

I have just built one of these: http://www.cpemma.co.uk/ef.html

Works very well and is cheap. Since i'm only going to use it with panaflo fans (2-3), i think a heatsink on the PNP-transistor would be overkill.

I reallly can recommend the Sony DDU-1621 DVD-ROM drive. It's really very quiet even when reading from cd/dvd-discs.

Easily the quietest drive I've ever heard.

absolutely, those components won't draw more than ~100W at full load.

Take a look at the psu-reviews here at Silent PC Review. MikeC is using a Watt meter and measures the current draw of a 2Ghz P4 system with similar components and the max power usage doestn't exceed 100W by much.

I sure envy you americans, with access to quiet cheap fans (panaflo fans for 3$, right?). I live in Sweden and I haven't seen Panaflos available anywhere.
