Re: WD10EVDS, new "best" 1TB silent HDD?

I figured it probably used 320GB platters, and so it probably does according to that database. Of course, under the hood, we all know Western Digital tend to change things around under the hood so I guess we'll never know for sure, since each drive could be different.

Re: WD10EVDS, new "best" 1TB silent HDD?

I wonder what made the original poster think the WD10EVDS might have just two platters (500GB each). I'd like to know for a fact whether or not they have two or three platters, but I'm aware that sometimes, Western Digital makes it hard to know this information, at least harder to find out than with...

If the "Cypress Pro" features a significantly different heatsink, then yes I'd say it's worth it to get the Vapor-X cooling, which the Toxic also uses.

Does anyone here have the HD5850 Vapor-X? I'm curious if it is really as quiet as it is supposed to be. I'd like to upgrade to a 5850 card, but don't want to have to mod it after spending 300+ on just the card. I have the Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 Toxic, which is pretty similar to the Vapor-X. At idl...

Does NCQ reduce noise in a heavily loaded hard drive?

I'm constantly doing multiple simultaneous file transfers over the network (100Mbit), from partition to partition on the same HDD, and from external storage devices (eSATA/USB 2.0) to my HDD. Often enough, all at the same time. Has anyone compared seek noise with, and without, NCQ enabled in this ty...

Do you see any early warning signs in the SMART data? I don't really know what to look for. Of course I could jump up and down at the Raw Read Error Rate, for example, but for all I know that could be a normal value. Etc. So here's the SMART data from the less clickety 2TB LP,from HDDScan. If I rem...

By the way, I'm pretty sure the entire series uses 500 GB platters through and through, so the 1.5 TB variant would thus use three platters.

One of my two, 2 TB LP drives makes clicks of death so often that it slows to a crawl during use. The other didn't for the first day of its use, but does click now, rarely. I'm not talking about the usual sounds of seeking, but instead, characteristic "clicks of death." Now I know all hard drives fa...

Is it likely my motherboard uses PWM to control the speed of the fans, even those on the 3-pin headers? That would really be interesting. As an aside, I bought the Nanoxia PWMX adapter to allow my motherboard to control my Noctua 120mm fans with the CPU's 4-pin PWM header. Seems to work pretty well ...

I suspect it's more a case of the sensors reading themselves incorrectly, and then reporting that incorrect result to whatever software (BIOS, etc.) polls it. But I'll try it out later when I get home, thank you for the suggestion.

EVGA P55 FTW fan control reports RPM all over the place

Hi folks, I put together my new system about a month ago (EVGA P55 FTW mobo and Core i7 860) and have only one serious issue that I can't seem to overcome -- the motherboard reports that my fan RPMs are simply all over the place, clearly being interpreted incorrectly by the BIOS. Does anyone know an...

Which fans to get for NH-U12P SE2?

Hello folks, I'm close to making a decision here and I would really appreciate your help. I have an Intel Core i7 860 overclocked by 25%. I'd like to try for more, but can't do so comfortably with the stock NH-12P SE2's fans (2 x NF-P12). I'm aware that the included fans (each considered alone) are ...

Need a cheap LGA775 heatsink/fan for the Q6600

In an office environment will the Intel retail heatsink/fan be noticed, if, say, the CPU is at an average 15-25% CPU load? Can I obtain a significant reduction in noise level (with at least equivalent cooling performance) with an inexpensive aftermarket cooler that costs around $20, give or take $10...

My Asus P5AD2-E Premium allows me to specify a lower than default voltage, slightly. It can go as low as 1.300 volts, within the BIOS. Which is a step below the 1.40 volts default for my 560J (3.6GHz) CPU. It also run sat 3.80GHz just fine at 1.30 volts.

How many watts does my P4 consume?

Hello folks, I'm the proud owner of a Pentium 4 560J, 3.6 GHz. I run my CPU at below spec voltage; it's set to 1.300 in my BIOS right now. It's overclocked to 3.85GHz, with a 1.1GHz FSB and 14x multiplier, RAM at 733MHz 2.10 volts (4-4-4-12-4 timings). Under full load (I define that as two instances...
