The consensus at the moment is to go with the optys. They overclock/undervolt more consistently and are priced similarly. I got my 144 running under 1V at stock speed. :) The larger cache should draw slightly more power, but since they are handpicked chips, they should be able to run at lower voltag...

Also have to agree with the previous posters that CFD is a very difficult subject and probably not worth it. There is a reason Formula One cars are so expensive, aerodynamics and flows are very difficult to manage. As Romeo said most time is used to check that things are physically/mechanically soun...

Next swooshing will probably be compliments of our newcomer randalee.

NeilBlanchard: Actually it is an explaination for that. If you look at the stats for all teams, they all have the same dips and peaks. Some are caused by servers at stanford going down, while most are caused by easy/difficult proteins being distributed. Can't let any bastardized BSDs catch us. I'm d...

If you all can recall the electricity part of your physics courses, you can perhaps remember that there is active and reactive effect. According to this review over at storagereview, the samsung is way faster, even competing with most "regular" drives. And judging from the experience of people here it is acoustically better than the seagate. As for the hitachi mentioned above, it is a personal favorite of mine. Unbeatable performan...

Really nice Max. I'm just concerned about the other components needing cooling. Normally some of the other components need some cooling, although not the same amount as the transistors. I'm not sure if it is the capacitors or the inductors.

Normally more platters equal more noise, but not always. Sometimes they have been able to design it drives so that there are no measureable difference. On the other hand an additional drive always gives increased noise. And if you mount them with mechanical contact they can interact and create addit...

All colours absorb and emit energy equally so it doesn't matter. To make it a bit more clear I mean that black absorbs and emits equally, while silver absorbs and emits equally, but at a different level with the net effect being the same.

Hope I didn't confuse you, I was myself for I while ;-)

The answer is ridiculously simple: Listen! The next thing you should deal with is the thing that bothers you the most. You seem to have gotten rid of some of the most annoying noise sources though. Other things to do is remove any small fans (eg on motherboard), deal with the cpu cooling, perhaps ch...

The same issue with a ram drive. How do I get it working before I log in?

Running as a service over a network?

I have a computer that I would like to run with the harddrive off as much as possible. So I had the idea of running the f@h service from a harddrive on the network. This works well as long as I do it manually. But WinXP doesn't accept a service to be started from a non-mapped folder (eg \\computer\s...

I'm ok with it. 10 fans each? It would be interesting to know about the tailing but guessing by the price I think they won't have connectors. For my part Oz can participate. I can survive on 8 fans. I've checked and a 500g letter costs 42 kr (~£25) to send to the UK. The problem is how Oz wants to p...
