I have something like 12Tb of media, the vast majority is mpeg2 based (TV recordings, DVD). As it stands I have to cherry pick what I load onto the server's 4tb array.

It was the TLER feature that was causing me concern as WD don't recommend this for non-RAID setups. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the software utility to enabe/disable TLER, it makes my decision very easy now.

Typically the raid edition is more expensive than the desktop equivalent. This is still the case, except over the past week or so the 1Tb raid edition has become £25/$50 cheaper than the desktop version. Well spotted, I stand corrected. So it looks more than likely that they 166Gb platters for the whole range, except the 750Gb which uses 188Gb platters.

I've been toying with what sort of external hard-drive or enclosure to buy. One of the things that is missing from any spec. sheet I've examined, is whether or not they allow the drives to idle/spin-down after a set period of time. The drive(s) will be connected to my MCE HTPC which runs 24/7.

Well I fashioned an air duct vent, and the temperature readings are the same as before (both the ambient & GPU temps). So it's no worse than what I had before, namely removing a PCI blanking plate. What I need to do is determine what effect this duct has on the rest of the system temperatures.
