I have something like 12Tb of media, the vast majority is mpeg2 based (TV recordings, DVD). As it stands I have to cherry pick what I load onto the server's 4tb array.

Pity that mobo only has 2 sata ports. If I paired it right down I could get 6 sata port mobo + CPU + RAM for £90.

WHS self-build (Prescott 3.2GHz vs. ???)

I'm building myself a WHS system, and I've got an old Prescott 3.2GHz CPU I could use. Now I know that the TDP is high for Prescotts, but as WHS spends most of it's time idling it makes more sense for me to compare the idling power consumption of this part with a modern cpu like a E5200/E6600 or a o...

It was the TLER feature that was causing me concern as WD don't recommend this for non-RAID setups. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the software utility to enabe/disable TLER, it makes my decision very easy now.

WD 1Tb drives

Typically the raid edition is more expensive than the desktop equivalent. This is still the case, except over the past week or so the 1Tb raid edition has become £25/$50 cheaper than the desktop version. Call me suspicious, but is there something about the raid edition 1tb drive I don't know about?...

This case takes it's design cues from the HD135. Zalman have added an 92mm exhaust fan for the main hard-drive cage. BTW all the internal fans can be plumbed into the control PCB which in turn can manage fan speeds either manually or automatically via thermal sensor probes. There are two 80mm exhaus...

(!) ??? I didn't know that. Why on earth not? I was under the impression that if you map a network drive to a drive letter, it is functionally identical to a standard storage device. Re: Zalman's HD135 HTPC case: Gasping for air

In the article The HD135 supports six internal drives — three more than the HD160. This clashes with our preference for using network storage in a noise-sensitive media center PC How I would love to do that, but last time I checked MCE2005 can't record to a network drive. It can record to other ex...

Pretty much as I feared. viewtopic.php?t=34891&highlight=hd135 contain some observations and a potential HDD suspension mod, but it looks like SPCR have proved that the foundation is so poor that it might prove too fruitless an exercise.

Toms hardware have an article on an HTPC build using this case (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/2006/10/16/building_a_low-power_home_theater_pc_system_uk/). Although their brief is to build a quiet system, the choice of components seem to be in conflict of that brief. And what's even worse, they don't...

Zalman HD135 - a new HTPC case

Don't know if anyone else has already pointed this out, but Zalman have a new HTPC case called the HD135 and it has been reviewed over at http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zalman/HD135/. It's similar in concept to the HD160, but rather than being 160mm in height, it's 135mm tall (hence the model na...

Well spotted, I stand corrected. So it looks more than likely that they 166Gb platters for the whole range, except the 750Gb which uses 188Gb platters.

What I find odd is how the platter densities change throughout the 7200.10 range. So either they are using different platter sizes (which would be costly on an inventory management perspective) or they are using the same platters throughout the range and using the drive's BIOS to exclude large parts...

And as mentioned, damping just the top panel is not enough; you probably have to add mass damping to almost all the panels. Absolutely, the acoustipack kit (which seems to have been discontinued) covers all the panels including underneath the motherboard. But yes, ultimately aluminium is not a good...

BTW, why does one need a full ATX motherboard for a HTPC? For high end, you need a vidcard, a HD tuner card (presumably w/a dual tuner one is available), and maybe a sound card. That still leaves one PCI slot free on a micro-ATX board. And from what I gather, many m-ATX boards have onboard video go...

I've been toying with what sort of external hard-drive or enclosure to buy. One of the things that is missing from any spec. sheet I've examined, is whether or not they allow the drives to idle/spin-down after a set period of time. The drive(s) will be connected to my MCE HTPC which runs 24/7.

Well I fashioned an air duct vent, and the temperature readings are the same as before (both the ambient & GPU temps). So it's no worse than what I had before, namely removing a PCI blanking plate. What I need to do is determine what effect this duct has on the rest of the system temperatures.
