Re: Electronic Noise and Tinnitus
Just a couple suggestions: re the M2 -- might have to try another one. They don't all make noise -- I have several, none of which makes any noise. You could try covering the charger stand with something like a big woolen cap? Though you might be risking overheating -- but higher pitched noise is usu...

Re fireseal: depends on what you want it to do. It will provide virtually no absorption below ~500hz because it's not thick enough, and probably too light. The pattern contouring helps higher up in frequency by providing greater surface area.

If you wait long enough, most foam ends up falling apart. Literally, into fine particles. When's it's in that end-of-life state, touch it and it can smear greasily on your fingers. It is a petrochemical product, and it seems to fall back into its original state... You see that in foam roll surrounds...

Just posting to confirm that an Akasa Apache Black 120mm works great in my N40L. The pin out mod is very easy, thanks to everyone for the info..... I already said this about your original post, and it's still cool. Too bad those images are lost, as they are usually essential for full understanding of posts. You'll be better off to upload the images to SPCR's server; I think there's room enough still for a while. That way, the images will last a...

It was reviewed here a decade+ ago. Try searching. Documentation will be sparse; they were custom propretary builds. Study the components, work carefully & you coul replace the mobo, probably without chipset cooling. Might need different length heatpipes and come up with a new CPU heatblock. Oh, the...

Hey Xen, you're always welcome to chat here! Interesting observations & experience. I don't do much posting except in niche topic forums which continue to have a more open atmosphere & practice, so can't really confirm all you say -- but I don't doubt it. Mike, did you move to Bowen Island? Salt Spring Island. And of course, now that we're in the country surrounded by umpteen trees & hills, the whole coast is being hit with the stormiest coldest winter in years, maybe decades. Half dozen powerouts so far, burned through at least a cord of firewood a...

Did you move the anechoic chamber? That process might be an interesting write-up once you're all settled. Yes it will. Re: Small Footprint Silent Lab PC
I might make the wood panels L-shape for a "normal" desktop PC, and put the PSU on the same side as the motherboard. This would reduce the footprint further, tho it would get a bit taller. That's assuming the extra ports & fan controller aren't needed.

FYI, a sneak preview: Measured at 1m distance, neither of the 2 Seagate 10TB samples on hand (Barracuda & Ironwolf) raised the ambient level of the anechoic chamber by more than 1 dBA. They increased overall level to around 12 dBA, from the usual 11 dBA. Remember, these are 7200rpm drives!!!

Re: Bitumen sheets, Fractal Design
That eggshell foam you linked will do virtually nothing at all. It's way too thin & too light (not dense) to have any effect below say... 1-2 kHz. And even above, I'd be surprised if maximum SPL reduction was more than a couple dB. It could have a mild reduction in higher frequency echoes if lined e...

Re: Bitumen sheets, Fractal Design
Just so people understand -- the function of the bitumen sheet lining is to reduce the tendency of the case panels to vibrate. It is panel damping. It does nothing for the airborne noise. So if you float mount HDDs and soft mount fans and generally use quiet components, there's really no audible dif...

Seagate's 10TB HDDs
Seagate announced their new roster of 10TB drives today. An impressive lineup. They also revived the Barracuda name, and added two more: Ironwolf for NAS and Skyhawk for surveillance. Not bad choices
, relevant to their intended functions.

Neil's explanation is good... But funny thing is, we've seen fans that follow this concept & sound good, but others that don't and still sound good. Ditto the converse. This is because strut/blade geometry is only one aspect of overall noise.

Re: Mike, what do you think about this mic for audio test @h
Not a great choice, mainly because any mic used for testing must be calibrated. This means matching its sensitivity to a known reference signal source, namely a mic calibrator. Such calibrators are almost all designed to fit over the head of a 1" diameter mic head. The one used here in SPCR lab is v...
