Re: Is SPCR Dead?

That may all be true but it looks like this site is totally dead. Mike posted a short note about a movie but that is the only new content on SPCR in 14 months, at least as far as I can see.

Re: Is SPCR Dead?

I posted a similar thread - it sure looks like the site is pretty dead. I know that I need this site less then I did in the past as noise isn't an issue for hard drives anymore as I only use them in servers where I don't care about noise. For any workstations I use SSDs. And recent CPUs have much lo...

Re: Need Video Card Recommendation for Oculus Rift PC

Anyone know how the AMD card compare to the Nvidia? The numbers for AMD are confusing to me as the minim is an R9 290. But there seem to be a lot of different model numbers available.

With Nvidia at the high end it seems to be either 970 or 980 with a few variations on those.

There are too many models and too much marketing speak for me. Which ones are the quiet ones? What do you recommend? The reason for this machine is Oculus Rift games. It will be squeezed into a Fractal Design Node 304 (mini-ITX), which can take up to 310mm cards. I'm shopping in the U.S. What did y...

Need Video Card Recommendation for Oculus Rift PC

I am not generally a gamer so for PCs that I have built over the last five years or so I have been more than happy to go with the integrated GPUs on Intel CPUs. So I haven't paid attention to video cards. But I am intrigued by VR so I have pre-ordered an Oculus Rift. The minimum specs for the Rift s...

Re: Asus Maximus VIII Impact Mini-ITX Skylake Motherboard

I agree that M.2 would be good but I don't agree that you shouldn't have IGPUs. A Mini-ITX mobo with an M.2 means that you could have a very small case, and even a passive case like a HD-Plex H1.S or even smaller since you don't need room for a SSD as long as you have the M.2. That makes for a great...

Re: HDPLEX 2nd Gen H5 heatsink case

http://www.infomine.com/investment/metal-prices/copper/ looks like copper is at least 3x the cost per pound. and of course copper is much heavier too.. But still how much does that add to the BOM? $10? $20? And I think it would look a lot cooler to have a copper coloured case - assuming it doesn't ...

Re: HDPLEX 2nd Gen H5 heatsink case

Someone should make a case like this with a copper case rather than an Al case. It shouldn't be that much more expensive, especially in the current low commodity price environment. Not only would this look cooler but it would have better thermal properties and allow you to use higher TDP CPUs - ass...

Re: HDPLEX 2nd Gen H5 heatsink case

HTPC implies a 1080p TV monitor (ok, implies for most of us, for now..). 95W limit on the GPU implies you could stuff a GTX 950 in there. It'd be interesting to see if the case could effectively cool a gaming PC for the living room environment. The integrated GPU on the Skylake series of CPUs can d...

Re: Skylake: Intel Core i7-6700K

Windows 7 users should take note that EHCI (Enhanced Host Controller Interface) has been dropped, a feature required for installing the O/S from a USB key. Windows 8 and 10 support USB installation through xHCI, so there are no issues there. If you're not ready to move on to Microsoft's newer opera...

Re: Scythe Ninja 4: A Legend Reborn

My understanding of the higher power requirements of Sky Lake is that this is due to the better GPU and that if you aren't using the GPU then you may not see the higher power consumption. But I guess we won't know until these are released and actually tested.

Re: Scythe Ninja 4: A Legend Reborn

Do we really still need such huge heat sinks when the Broadwell line maxes out at a TDP of 65W for the i7-5775? Can't much more modest sized coolers do the job in a virtually silent setup at that power level?

Or do serious overclockers still need something like the Nina 4?

How many of the cases now have USB Type C connectors on the front? That is something that I am certainly going to want as I am hoping that it will become the new standard very quickly. Oh the joy of never having to endlessly turn around a USB connector.

I do back up my SageTV media server (at least videos, photos and music) to my WHS every night but the incremental files added on a daily basis are pretty minimal. Re: Thecus N7710-G 7-Bay NAS with 10 GbE

I am not too worried - I don't know that I ever saturate a 1Gb network so this is more of a rhetorical question than actual right now. To be honest, I am not sure how much a home user would need that fast a network connection, even with 4K video files.

Re: Thecus N7710-G 7-Bay NAS with 10 GbE

I believe the comment towards the 10Gb card and 1Gb devices not allowing "full performance" is based on the usual assumption that the only benefit to higher interface speeds is to achieve higher full saturation on the network. A 10Gb card allows 10x 1Gb saturation....so the typical benefit is that ...
