Any cases similar to the HP SmartMedia Server?

http://microsoftatces.com/photos/photos ... re468.aspx

Its dimensions are only 14cm x 25cm x 23cm. Seems to be a nice and tidy size!

My idea has spawned into a dedicated very small server, with plenty of ability to add more storage as required. I want to build a webserver cache/proxy server so that info can be sourced faster locally and to also reduce data usage for frequently visited http: site and ftp sites. (Squid Proxy server...

The shot below shows my CM Stacker after I got rid of the 4-in-3 (the grommets were becoming less and less effective - or maybe the HDDs are getting noisier?) - the front has been removed. http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/7720/undiesuspge1.th.jpg Thanks for that update. The reason for i like the Coolermaster 4 in 3 or Thermaltake iCage http://www.pccasegear.com/prod2969.htm is because it does have that fan blowing air over the HDDs and because they are a 5.5 to 3.5" HDD solution. I would use a case like the CoolerMaser 532 Centruion which has filtered front panel a...

i guess that if i was to retro fit a 120mm fan to blow directly across the HDDs then i could achieve a more efficient cooling with the silencers.

What cools your HDD better?

Im curious to know what would provide more efficient HDD cooling. The options are: 1. CoolerMaster 4-in-3 Module for Stacker http://www.pccasegear.com/images/cm4in3b.jpg or the Hard Drive Vibration Silencer http://www.pccasegear.com/images/hddvibe2-019b.jpg The difference being that the CoolerMaster...

The would still use an IDE or Sata HDD but i guess that the USB is only for the data transfer and as such the HDD doesnt get any signal to spin down,

Thus the search for ones that spin down automatically.

Also are there any external HDD cases that can run off the USB as its poiwer supply?

Hi Andyb, Thanks for responding in part. To answer your question. I have a Silverstone LC03vfd case and i plan to dremel an 80mm hole in the base of the horizontal HTPC case. any data on whether straight blades vs scooped blades

Im curious to hear if the pro's and con's for straight blades versus scooped blade and in particular which provide more pressure?

I am looking at the Aerocool 120mm Streamliner or Turbine Fans. (has more blades) and i plan to suck the air through a 10cm length of 80mm ducting.

case temp vs fan noise v air circulation

Im thinking about this again and again. There is clearly a direct correlation between case temps, fan noise and air circulation. Firstly, what is the general concensus about good case temp for a quiet PC? Perhaps 10c above ambient? Flowing on from that is the relation of fan noise and air circulatio...

Will the thermo controlled fans still operate properly at 5V

I know standard fans will run a 5V but im not sure if the temp probe will still work properly at 5V? What im looking at doing is mod one of these 80 or 120mm fans so that it gets its power from a usb port. It will be used to cool a PVR (non PC). If you have any suggestions for which model/brand plea...

your asus mobo comes with temp monitoring software! (also lets you OC or UC!)

as far as the gpu temps, that depends on your card, if it has a thermal probe built in!

I have an Asus 9600XT/TVD which lets me OC it if i need to !

what is better cooling for the HDD?

Im undecided over what proves the better option here.

1. Fan blowing over across bare mounted HDD, or
2. a HDD Sink (like hdd rails) with natural convection? ( negligible case air flow)

Thanks

Yes it is Fitness that i am refering to!

If its bogus values, how do they determine it?

And lastly, to assist in the natural cooling of the HDDs, do you think that positioning them vertically, (on their long side) would be beneficial? (rather than lying in the standard horizontal position?

I have 2 HDDs. A Samsung SP1614C 160gb and recently a Maxtor DM10 300gb drive. The Maxtor reads excellent performance and condition (brand new unit) whils the 1 year old Samsung reads excellent performance, medium condition. i'd have to have the fans blowing from the underside of the HTPC case.

So would it be best to blow the underside of the HDD where the circuit board is? (presuming thats the hottest part of the HDD)?

Since adding a 2nd HDD to my case, my case temps have risen about 3C-4C. I currently have them sandwiched together which isnt helping to keep them cool, so i will separate them and wanted to know what will yield the best result? Upside down will permit the underside of the HDD (presumably the hottes...
