Gentle Typhoon Alternative?

Can't seem to find Gentle Typhoons in reasonable speeds/prices anywhere. Looking for something very quiet with good static pressure capabilities to push or pull air through pretty densely populated hot swap hard drive enclosure with no voltage or PWM control. (I could run a resistor in line, but I'd...

Re: Lone Industries Mini-ITX prototype

Yes, that's what I'm hoping to do. That way I can retain the durable steel fasteners instead of switching to aluminum. The risk is that the parts could get scratched or damaged though. The actual surface finish is still a little up in the air. Bead blasting would be nice, but it's very expensive/ti...

Re: Lone Industries Mini-ITX prototype

Well, summer is basically over, and it looks like I'm finally going to take the plunge and start trying out anodizing on my parts. I may even go with a Type III Hard Coat anodized finish, but have to confirm the brown-grey color it produces. Anodizing has a lower minimum fee per color, so I may be ...

Re: FedEX damaged my ITX case, time for a new one

I took a look at removing them but I'm not sure how to go about it. Are they adhered with thermal pads or adhesive? Will I need to replace the heatsinks? They're usually adhesive of some sort. You definitely don't need to replace them. DDR3 consumes much less power than DDR2, and doesn't need the h...

Lawrence - could you please check out my post - viewtopic.php?f=28&t=66873

I'm very curious as to if you encountered the same sort of behavior I did when testing the Asus board.

Re: Asus Z87I-DELUXE - Fan Xpert Issues

Update - exchanged some emails with Asus tech support. They're utterly worthless. Suggested reinstalling AI suite, then tried to have me RMA the board (at my shipping cost). I informed them that I had tried 2 identical boards and they both exhibited the same bad behavior. At this point, Asus went ra...

Re: Asus Z87I-DELUXE - Fan Xpert Issues

Have you tested other fans to see if its not a defective fan or even an incompatible fan. Have you checked if your Q-Fan is on Auto (PWM) and not in Advance (Voltage controlled)? Yes, tested other fans. Yes, verified that q-fan is set properly for the CPU fan. Chassis fans don't have that option. I...

Re: Asus Z87I-DELUXE - Fan Xpert Issues

I'm sure Abula will step in soon and fill you with glorious details on the idiosyncrasies of Fan Xpert. Here's some early feedback - the only true PWM control is on the CPU. The others...aren't. Do you have a voltage controlled fan you can try in that position? I did try a traditional fan in the no...

Asus Z87I-DELUXE - Fan Xpert Issues

I just built a Haswell box using the Z87I-DELUXE. I'm having several issues that I haven't run into in the past with Asus mobos. Other forums have been pretty much a dead end, so I'm trying here, as SCPR has always been a big proponent of AI Suite and Fan Xpert. I've tried 2 separate boards (love Am...

Cool, not sure why another color other than white or black would cost so much more (not your fault, your powdercoater's I'm sure). My vote would be for bright blood red.

Re: Lone Industries Mini-ITX prototype

I've been looking at a couple of options. One would be to change from a one piece bracket to a two piece bracket (imagine just the two sides of the current bracket). Do you really even need a 2 piece bracket? The metal seems pretty sturdy, and mounting the drives just on one side should be fine - s...

Re: Lone Industries Mini-ITX prototype

So, a regular quad core is feasible, if you limit the power consumption. You won't get your full 4-core turbo, but it comes close, and you can get your 1/2/3 core turbos plus overclocking. Awesome! Just curious - did you check the voltage of the separate lines via mobo software or whatever while lo...

I agree. GPU fans are also waaaay more annoying than CPU fans. Keeping those lower RPMs would be a better idea.

Re: Lone Industries Mini-ITX prototype

thanks for the link/info, but im still going try it (thinking maybe i should get a 4670T @45w). I'd bet it'd work with a 45watt TDP at the standard speeds. Just keep an eye on the sag when turbo gets engaged (may be hard to test - I'm thinking single threaded prime95 runs). Let us know how it goes!...

I believe that the wide input picos have even lower ratings than the pure 12v input ones.

@ mankey i see no reason why a quad core (-especially an i5 haswell using on-chip GPU) could not by run off a pico. - its the next upgrade i want to make....and i swore off using ATX PSU's years ago... That's what I thought as well, as the Picos are advertised up to 160 watts. Most quad cores have ...

The sleeving looks really good also. Have you considered running any of it behind the motherboard? Thanks! The pico input wires are really stiff, so I didn't want to run them behind the mobo and put a ton of stress on the termination points, that's why I went with a gentle bend up front, and approa...

Yah, in an application like that, blowing in will work way better. Your load temps aren't that bad though. Could probably run the fans even slower.
