Jan, thanks for the tips. The Tyan s2460 is ATA-100/66/33. But I may spend some more time tweaking the I/O settings to see if that makes any difference.

I've had a weird problem with my SP1213n -- it gets I/O errors and corrupts windows in my Tyan dually box, but works just fine when attached to my Abit KR7A box. Other drives work fine with the Tyan box. So the drive isn't exactly dead, but it won't work in my preferred application. Too bac, because...

Agreed that they should disclose shipping costs prior to closing the transaction. However, I found their shipping costs to be fair -- though I didn't find out what it was until the package arrived.

That definitely sounds like a psu problem.

This subject can be very difficult, because noise can come from so many sources in an audio system. The power supply for your speakers is probably going to be the biggest source of noise. This is true of all audio equipment. One of the easiest places for manufacturers to save money and lower costs i...

I agree with the previous respondents: the tube is going to be a major heat source. I'll add this: IMHO, if you want to improve sound reproduction or recording, the first step should be to get the analog output and D/A conversion out of the computer case. Then get some good power supply filtering fo...

No, that's simply tricking the mobo chipset into seeing the CPU as an MP. My theory is that all Athlons are tested at the fab, and the ones that test below a certain current draw threshold are binned for MP certification. The others have their L5 pads cut and end up being XPs. So MPs are simply cher...

The board doesn't seem to to let me edit my post, so here's a new chart that includes MP 1900+ data for comparison. AMD Athlon XP vs. MP

FWIW, I discovered the following while doing a little research. (Sorry 'bout the code formatting, but can't figure out a better way to make a table.) CPU Freq Vcore Icc (max/typ) Power (max/typ) XP 2400+ 2000 1.65V 41.4A/37.6A 68.3W/62.0W MP 2400+ 2000 1.65V 36.4A/33.1A 60.0W/54.6W XP 1900+ 1600 1.7...

I think that any forum members that are associated with/work for/sell silent products have a mandatory distinction (perhaps having "TRADER" where 'silent apprentice' or 'admin' normally is, also a graphical avatar to distinguish them) I like this idea. I'm also of the opinion that silenx should be ...

Your temps seem a bit high. Make sure the heatsink is seated properly before doing anything else. Next, CoolerMaster heatsinks are not terrible, but the fans are rediculously noisy. Very cheap solution is to get a 60mm-to-80mm adapter ($5 at Compusa) and a Panaflo 80mm L1a. Just did this to a machin...

Thanks for your advice regarding the case fans. I took out the intake fan. Results: less noise, cpu0 down 1C, and cpu1 down 2C. Fantastic!

jimbob, I have to give you some ranges of figures, because the CPU temps vary depending on ambient temp and which video card is installed. w/ Geforce3 CPU0 39-43C CPU1 44-50C w/ Radeon 9700 CPU0 41-45C CPU1 49-55C This is with a Tyan Tiger MP (s2460), and Palomino-core Athlon XP 1600s. Hope this hel...

You can probably imagine what a gawdawful racket my rig made when it had stock Antec case fans and stock HSFs.

It's not silent now, but much better than before. I think a quieter PSU would make the biggest difference at this point.

Having mounted and unmounted the SLKs several times in a dually box, I found that there's a trick to it. Once you know the trick, it's dead simple. First, make sure you have an appropriate screwdriver. The one I use is 3/16 inch (4.5 mm) wide. This is much smaller than what I've had to use for other...

Good to know, powergyoza.

What is the temp differential between CPUs on your system? I was getting up to 10C difference with the Radeon 9700, and 5-6C difference with a Geforce3.

We have lots of 21" Sony G500s at work, and I love them. I use two of them in a dual-head arrangement, both at 1280x1024 at 85 Hz. Very quiet. Just for kicks, I set one of them to 1600x1200 at 120 Hz, and it's still dead quiet. At home I have a 19" ViewSonic PF790. At my normal working resolution (1...

I am using two SLK-800s with 80mm Panaflo L1A fans to cool my dually system: Tyan Tiger MP with two Athlon XP 1600s (Palomino core). This is in an Antec SX-series case. Keeps temps at 50c or below even under full load. Also have Panaflos in the case, two exhaust and one intake. Probably overkill, bu...
