It looks like the Edge is fanless, so the biggest noise source is the hard drive... Which is silent when it's spun down (not idle).

I'm not sure, but I think the 20th Anniversary Mac may have been fanless.

Zalman ZM-NB47J. It's a little (well, relatively big, I guess) blue heatsink for your chipset. It's enough to cool most chipsets passively.

Flash drives have a relatively limited number of read/write cycles before they die. I wouldn't suggest it as a main partition, especially if you're using swap space.

Adding to evalachovic's request... Anyone know where to get cheap (i.e., about 10 bucks or less) LCD displays? Preferably graphic and backlit, but alphanumeric and non-backlit is fine.

Ah, I see. I'd guess it's about equal, maybe a couple watts higher for the AGP version.

Here ya go. :D

Edit: Oh, and IIRC, the difference is that the 6800 series has a broken WMV9 decoder.

I sincerely doubt that those Cooler Master fans are 13 dBA. Get a good 120 mm fanned PSU (Nexus 4090 Special Edition?), stick a Nexus 120 on the XP-120, and another Nexus 120 in the rear 120 mm fan spot (there is one, correct?). That should be enough cooling for that system.

Sure, the new ones are quiet, but they've got this really crappy mushy feeling. For me, if the keyboard feels like crap, I don't care how quiet it is.

On Newegg, a decent 15" LCD is about $200. A decent 17" CRT display is about $110. I don't consider that to be a huge price difference.

For starters, get a VGA Silencer Rev. 3 on that 9800XT. It'll help a lot with the noise, and exhaust the hot air from the card right out of the case (helps with temps across the board).

My 6800GT had thermal pads on the bumps where the cooler met the RAM, so I'm guessing it's intended to be used with some type of TIM.
