Re: NF-S12A 120mm fan, third generation.
Hum, I wonder just how well it would fare in a restrictive environment i.e. a heatsink or radiator. It may shine best as a case fan. I need to look more into this one.

Re: consumer-grade SATA expansion under linux?
andymcca, you building a HTPC/NAS? Just curious. I went for a 3 drive Raid-5, via mdadm on Lenny, when a built my NAS a while back now. I have an unplugged spare for if/when a drive dies, but I now wish I had gone Raid-6. Raid-6 may be something you will want to look into. I'll be watching this thre...

Re: Are Scorpios vibrators now? Or did I just get a bad one?
I just want to follow up and say the 2.5" Hitachi 5K500.B 500GB sample I just got in from OWC is very nice indeed and highly recommended. This will be my de-facto 2.5" choice until SSDs become cheaper, at least for now.
Any feedback from recent Scorpio purchasers?

Are Scorpios vibrators now? Or did I just get a bad one?
I love the WD2500BEVS (2.5" WD Scorpio 250GB 5400rpm) in my MacBookPro, both of which I got back in '07. I a few months ago I got a 320GB Scorpio 5400rpm though (I'll look up the model number when I get a chance), and it vibrated like an ultrasonic chamber. Ok not quite, but it was very noticeable t...

I would recommend running the fan(s) from a 4-pin molex and running the yellow tac wire by itself directly from the fan to the motherboard on it's own 3-pin molex. This way you can play with what you wire up the fan(s) to run at without worrying about the tac wire. For Slipstream 1200RPM, I like to ...

Check out the sticky. ;) the 800rpm version isn't quite as quite as the 1200rpm version, at a given rpm. I like Slipstreams for case fans. s-flexes for horiztonal situations (if I'm feeling conservative that day) and higher restrictive environments like heatercores I personally consider 800rpm loud ...

You joined in '03 and are asking this question? ;) Just try running your fan at 5v off the powersupply instead of plugged in to the motherboard. No new fan purchase necessary. http://jab-tech.com/ will have the wiring available if you need to pick up some. Just use CoreTemp or some such to watch you...

You want to use it for the top, horizontal exhaust? I personally would recommend blocking off the top exhaust with foam and only using the back for exhaust for the quietest setup. But yeah, if you really what to go horizontal with an S-Flex the 1200rpm on a resister is probably the best route to tak...

There were two models, and one of them noisy. :? IIRC there's an article on the matter here at SPCR. If it were my money I would spend the little bit more for the WD640GB. I'm still running one of the noisy 320GB in one desktop, but I didn't even bother trying to find a quiet version for another des...

If I recall correctly, there was a hardware product for this a while back, say '05 or so. Cost $100, again IIRC, and while it garnered some praise never quite caught on. Anyone else tried these? I'm curious if the lower rpm model, 800rpm, is awesome, or if it has issues like S-Flex and the higher rpm models like the 1150rpm or 1450rpm models, undervolted, are the route to go and how they compare. Currently happy with my setup, but noticed these guys on jab-tech toda...

is if case cooling is affected by slightly negative or positive case pressure. Only if you have a very dusty environment (thinking of Bluefront) does it matter, and you would want a positive pressure case with a good filter. Otherwise, it's not an issue. I personally go with a negative pressure cas...

Welcome to SPCR! :D Yeah, the 1600rpmers generally aren't recommended unless, say, you're moving away from Delta screamers which is less common nowadays. Just noticed you were initially considering the G. The 1900rpmer would probably been even less attractive if you are looking for a quiet setup, r...

I've never known Vantecs to be quiet. Perhaps my experience with them is dated. It's going to be hard to achieve SPCR-spec quietness with 60mm while effectively cooling anything but the lowest-watt CPUs, and in that case I would try to just go passive. You got a E5200 @ 3.75ghz in there? Time for so...

I currently tend to not use intake fans for just a single HDD. Just put it right in the opening. I modded my Antec Solo serving NAS duty to accept two Scythe 100mm fans. If you're handy and really want an intake, you could block off one of the fan areas and mod in a 100mm in the other. You did alrea...

As everyone else has stated, it depends. Here's the louder 2x92mm option I'm using to cool 5 HDDs in my Linux raid-5 NAS. 1-disconnected spare (would have gone raid-6 or raid-5 + spare this time around), 1 - OS drive, 3 - Linux software raid-5). http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v235/drcr1/Cooling/t...

Maybe Zalman has started up a program similar to Belkin's?
There are several options, but I find a slipstream @ <700rpm a nice route currently. I've transitioned away from YLs myself, but they are a good option if you're just starting out and on the cheap.

As mentioned by others, it's really only useful for when you are trying to mod a case to a better layout.
Pics here of a late ninetys-era case modded into the 120mm era. Currently sporting a fan-modded EarthWatts and 500rpm Slipstream. Ugly, yes, but great props at lan parties.

HDT-D1264 hard to beat at $23-24. SPCR's Review . 120mm is the way to go and though subjective, I consider anything beyond 700-800rpm loud, no matter what fan. The S-Flex is probably better in a few select areas e.g. highly restrictive environments like heatercores, but you basically can't go wrong with a 800rpm Slipstream assuming you have a decent heatsink. :) If you are planning on picking up a controller anyway and are concerned about the efficacy of y...

Yes the Si97 is one of the best SocketA air cooling options. Good call on you picking one up at such a nice price. I would have to imagine TTake (yawn) BigTyp would win the crown nowadays though.
