Re: liquid cooling vs. air cooling

did't know that there is a semi-passive power supply. it's interesting. i saw that there are also Fan-less p.s. will it work well? what about the fan diameter in the p.s. ? i know that usually bigger is quieter. there are 120 mm and 135. can it be a problem with 135 mm p.s fan in some cases? I actu...

Re: liquid cooling vs. air cooling

at list this isn't correct: "for double the price" there are many aio systems that cost same , or almost same, as a good air cooling. the question was about sonic differences. AIO that cost the same have inferior cooling compared to similarly priced air cooling. Vicotnik is 100% correct when he sai...

Re: M.2 SSD under GPU: Bad idea (in a quiet PC)?

There are two separate issues being asked. Putting m.2 drives right under a videocard is never a good idea. All current NVME drives run hot under sustained load, and all of them throttle, some worse than others. They say they're designed to handle high temps, but heat kills. Losing a drive is very d...

lol, and I just bought Ninja 4. Good to see it's AM4 compatible out of the box. Also nice to see black top instead of tacky chrome. I am disappointed that it's uni-directional only. On most current AM4 motherboards the fans will be blowing front to back thanks to socket orientation, but it does make...

I finally broke down and ordered one. The $270 deals from rakuten were too good to pass by. I currently have 4TB mechanical drive for my data and have spent this weekend deleting stuff I don't need anymore and moving whatever else I could to the NAS. After all said and done I'm under 2TB now. Even t...

Re: External Drive: WD Gold vs Samsung SSD ?

For cold storage I'd prefer mechanical HDD. Flash memory could have retention problem if sitting unpowered for a while. Personally I would only choose SSD for backup if you had issues with backup times as mechanical hard drives are going to be way slower than SSD, especially if there are a lot of da...

Re: RX Vega 56 Review Compilation Thread

Back in the day I tried undervolting with MSI afterburner, but every single time I've failed. The cards (R9 290 and RX480) might have been stable under desktop, they might have been stable under certain workloads, but inevitably, sooner or later they would crash the computer. Maybe wattman tool woul...

Re: RX 480 Review Compilation thread

Turns out my Asus Strix sample has a pretty nasty coil whine. As with all coil whine it only happens in specific situations, in my case it happens when I play L4D, but when it happens it's pretty loud - I can hear it outside the case. I did not notice this problem with MSI card so I'll have to reaff...

Also got a chance to play with Asus Strix RX480. I didn't put it through a thorough testing, but my overall impression is that stock cooling is still louder than MSI RX480. That said, the cool thing about Asus Strix RX480 is that it has extra two 4-pin outs right on the video card PCB. The idea is t...

FYI got a chance to play with PowerColor Red Devil 8GB and PowerColor Red Dragon 4GB, they're definitely not as good as MSI. PowerColor cards default to keeping the card at 80C, while MSI defaults to 72C. At their respective default settings I would say all three cards are practically silent however...

Re: 6970 - Accelero S1 Rev 2 or S1 Plus possible?

Back in the day I put S1 on 7950 and 7970. 7950 was perfectly happy with S1, 7970 strangely was not. It's possible I got poorly binned 7970 sample that had extremely high power draw, but it's also possible that the power consumption jump from 7950 to 7970 was too high for the Accelero S1 to handle. ...

All of the heatsinks in my household are Ninjas. The HTPC is using mini Ninja and I'm pretty sure that I even have the original Ninja1 still in use in house somewhere. Wanted to say thanks for the tutorial. I have a file server full of the ST4000DM000, both retail and shucked. And all of them were parking heads like crazy, not only that, but they would often park heads at the most inappropriate time seemingly just because. I'd be copying a file and all of a sudden...

I've been running 10 in my file server in the basement for a couple of months now. So far so good, no complaints. Just like any other "green" drive they're quiet. They do make chirping noises every once in a while, not sure if that's head parking or what not, but otherwise they're quiet, and so far,...

Re: Radeon R9 290X Cooling

I can vouch for "the mod". Yes, it does introduce water pump noise, and unfortunately in my experience the pump noise has a lot of sample variance. The asetek (round type) coolers are more convenient for "the mod" because they do not cover the GPU mounting holes, however they're louder than CoolIT a...

I have a few of them. I never really liked them. They had very little air noise, but the motor always had a very distinct "whine" to it. I could never get over that whine in my desktop. Re: Western Digital Red 4TB & Se 4TB Hard Drives

I was already planning on getting 4x 4TB Red drives as I no longer trust Seagate's reliability (and their lame 2-year warranty), and the 4TB Hitachi's are only available in 7,200rpm flavour and I know to not be particularly quiet. Technically Hitachi still sells 4TB 5400RPM green drive, but it has ...

Be careful not to block airflow to the hard drives though, otherwise the temps might climb too high. If after all of that you're still not satisfied with the noise, then you'll probably have to buy "green" drives to replace your 7200 spinners.

Yes, P18x series is a beast. Like others I have cut several holes in my case for easier cable and SATA cable management. Requires tools and a little spare time, but it's easily doable. A year ago I bought P280 because I wanted USB3.0 headers on the front and dual 120mm top exhaust vent, and I was re...

Maybe a tad longer loading times with a 5400RPM drive, but nothing dramatic. 4k video without an issue, yes. Consider WD Red, they are a bit more expensive than the Greens, but have longer warranty. I thought the red drives where for raid? I thought the green was as quiet as WD makes? Both Green an...

What Abula has said. Only overclocked or SLI/Crossfire rigs need more than 300-500W. And even 500W is overkill unless you have a very high end power hungry videocard. I have Rosewill SilentNight 500W (same as KingWin Stryker STR-500) and it has zero problems powering 3570K with HD7970.
