Thanks for responding. I'll respond to your questions in order: My machine has been on a good-quality APC UPS since day one. I do use a round cable for the purposes of airflow improvement, but it's a high quality one (read: expensive). I find this idea interesting, though ... certainly a lousy cable...

What was the operating temperature of your HDD over this period? Belated followup: if anyone still cares, I just found a program that could read this information. It obviously can't tell me what the drive temp has been all along, but currently the temp sits at 33C, even during heavy drive access, a...

Sorry for the belated followup ... I've been busy for several days and haven't even had my computer on since writing the original post. I bought a WD 160GB Cavier SE today, as per the one recommendation in this thread. I hope to try it out within the next couple of days (or this weekend at the lates...

Replacing a dying Samsung HD ... recommendations?

When I assembled my A64 3000+ system last summer, I went with a Samsung 1614 160GB drive based partially upon the recommendations here. I also went with a Samsung DVD-ROM, based upon things I'd read elsewhere about the quietness of those. Well, I've only been disappointed with two of the components ...

I have a Samsung Spinpoint 1614 with a JVC motor in a Sonata case. At first I didn't notice any noises at all from the drive, but now I can occasionally detect a little bit of seek noise (sounds more like a distant rustling than a seek, really, and I usually have to be listening for it to hear it). ...

Are some JVC motors FDB, or all BB? While I won't attempt to speak to the larger questions you've posed, I do at least recall reading elsewhere here that someone had contacted Samsung and been told that all the SP1614 drives had FDB. Since some of the SP1614's have JVC motors (mine, for example), I...

I agree with burcakb that the Maxtor drive is likely to detract markedly from the quietness of your system. I also wonder if that Athlon 64 3200+ you are thinking of is the 512KB L2 cache version or the 1MB L2 cache version. While some may disagree with me, with these particulat processors I think y...

thx for all ur input....will flashing the bios to make it a 9800xt will it lower the life of the card if i left it at stock settings? The thing is that a lot of the current 9800 Pro cards are shipping with the XT's R360 chipset rather than the R350, which apparently means that they can be flashed i...

I just finished building a new machine with several of the parts you have mentioned, so I'll add my thoughts on those items: 1.)is the sonata better than the bqe? I've got the Sonata case and am very impressed with it. I just looked at the online info about the BQE for comparison. They are quite sim...

I have a brand new Samsung SD-616EEPB reader. It's nice and quiet when playing back DVDs, but I think it may have to be sent back because it is giving me a LOT of errors when reading of both DVDs and CDs (starting with my Windows XP install, which should have been an early clue in retrospect). I dou...

I just finished building a new machine with a Samsung PATA 160GB 8MB buffer drive (SP1614N) that I bought from Newegg a week ago after far too much hand-wringing. I skipped SATA this time around because I didn't want to be on the "bleeding edge", and it seems to me that SATA still has a few teething...

No dice at MicroCenter ... and how loud is "loud"?

I read in another thread that one could visually check OEM 1604's on the shelf at MicroCenter. So this morning I drove two hours to my nearest MicroCenter outlet and went through several dozen 1604's on their shelves. Alas, every last one of them had a JVC motor. There were a few Samsung 120GB drive...
