Your Zalman is dusty! :P Mind showing one pic from the cable area? Sure, but I have to show you a few pictures for it to make sense... IMO it looks like a mess until you see it from a few angles. Side view. All I really did was tuck the PS wires up and velcro bundles of them together. I also ...

i have never seen a motherboard that was not extended atx that has 6 ram slots. what is the max you can put in there. It's capable of running in dual-channel mode with four slots of double-sided DDR. If you want to fill all six slots then only two banks can be double-sided, and the other four have ...

Weren't Silent Drives bad for HDs at 7200 rpm and above? Or was it Smart Drives? You're right, I have Smart Drive enclosures . I fixed my post to have the correct info. I tested one WD with S.M.A.R.T. hooked up to the regular IDE port when I first got the enclosures, and the temps are 2-3c above wh...

schnee's quiet Coolermaster

Time to show off the rig. I've put a lot of work into making this a quiet machine... and SPCR's articles and recommendations have been essential. First, the specs: Coolermaster 110 (drool) P4 2.4c w/ Zalman 7000Cu heatsink Gigabyte 8knxp w/ Zalman passive northbridge heatsink 1gb PC 3200 ATI Sapphir...

Just to be difficult, I'm going to suggest that my 7 year old Aopen beige box is a better example of case design than the new G5. Really. Oh please. The G5 is the ultimate example of what can be done when an engineering team can throw out the ATX spec and design for the new hot machines. All...

I'm running dual Raptors in SmartDrives and they're barely audible. The system has several things that are fairly quiet but contribute to a quiet but not silent system - Zalman 7000cu, four Papst case fans (the two in front are audible), Zalman 400w psu, 2 x 120gb 7200.7 Seagates (right behind the t...

OK, a better answer: I just dropped two WD Raptor SATA drives into SmartDrive silencers, and they fit perfectly. The connector is just short enough to fit inside the enclosure if you press the HD slightly in as you put the cover on. I can barely hear them. It rocks. When I formatted the drives for m...

Another data point... I've been using my WD 100 SE's in Smart Drives for two years straight, leaving the 'puter on 24/7, not a single problem. The Smart Drives are slightly warm to the touch, so I know the heat's being transferred. The 'do not cover' hole is to allow the drive to adjust for slight a...

It's a PS specially-made for server-class boards that draw a lot more power. The power cable to the mobo has 24 pins instead of 20, as well as another 8-pin hookup.

The IWill I'm looking at can take both kinds, but I'm more comfortable going for the beefier PS.

Quiet EPS 12V power supply?

I'm looking into a dualie setup, and it'll be a pretty decked-out rig, so I'm considering getting an EPS supply. Anyone have experience with these? Are they OMG LOUD and there's nothing I can do? Or are they in the same ballpark as some of the quieter supplies on the consumer side of the fence? FWIW...

They're both, at their core, Fotron power supplies with different fans. They may have different heatsinks as well, but I'm not sure about that, so don't take that as fact.

So, yes, they're very much alike.

I have the 110, which is the 201 with a door.

Both front fans in my box are elastomer mounted. It's tricky - takes some dexterity and a set of needle-nose pliers with a 'hook' shape - but it's do-able.

The drive 'cage' is not removable, it's part of the structure of the box.

Be careful. Monitors are designed to run at a certain temp. Yes, they *need* to run hot. If you cool it down too much you may damage it.

If you swap the fan replace it with the same CFM.
