Re: what makes the macbook air so quiet?
Ultrabooks are getting pretty good too. I have a Samsung Series 9 and in light usage (e.g. web browsing) the fan is inaudible, unless I put my ear right up to it. About as good as the MacBook Air I use at work. However, load the CPU a bit (~40% or so) and the fan starts to ramp up slightly. Gaming i...

Re: Antec Solo hard disk suspension elastic problems?
I used two twists for the 3.5'' drive. I can't remember for the 2.5'', might have been the same or one more twist.

Antec Solo hard disk suspension elastic problems?
I've only been using my Antec Solo for about 6 months and already the hard disk suspension elastic has gone all loose. Luckily, I noticed it while removing the front filters for cleaning. My 3.5'' disk was barely hanging on at an extreme angle. Even the elastic holding my 2.5'' SSD had gone all loos...

I installed the S1 on my card yesterday. The clear spacers did seem a bit too thick but I just applied some pressure and tightened the screws a bit more. The VRM heatsinks weren't suitable so I just used the RAM heatsinks on the VRMs and left the RAM chips bare. I don't think I can run the card pass...

Quiet Tablet PCs?
Hi, I'm looking for a tablet PC and was wondering if anyone had suggestions on a quiet one?
Speed isn't an important factor. The major things I'm looking at are that it needs to have an active digitzer and SPDIF out.
Thanks in advance.

Are all the grommets that seem melted on the same hard drive? What about the other grommets you got with this case - even the ones you've never used? This sounds like improperly cured silicone, and I'd at least email Antec, telling them I thought that I might have faulty grommets and see if they'd ...

funny :D can you post a photo? It didn't look any different, just felt wet and sticky. As for the melting grommets, I don't know the melting point of those, but I'm sure it's a lot higher than the temperature that a hard drive would die at. If they are wet and sticky when cool, that would imply tha...

P180 hard disk grommets melted
I was replacing my hard disk with a new one when I noticed that all 4 rubber grommets that the hard disk was attached to were wet and sticky. It seems like they have melted... Both sides of the grommets were like that. They have also left a sticky stain around the screw holes of the hard disk. The o...

I have bought in Rome the WD GP 1tb (286 euro) and i have tested it on an opened box usb near a Samsung HD501lj both on my desk. At idle, WD is more silent, but seeks are more noisy. I understand the low value of this report, but waiting for SPCR test.... I liked WD and i'll buy an other. I just in...

Does it make the noise even when not mounted inside the case? Not sure, I haven't tested it yet. First, does the humming change volume at 12V vs ~7V? (It should change volume considerably!) Second, do you have your fans hard-mounted (using steel fan screws, for instance)? Yes, the volume of the hum...

At 12v, the noise of the wind (whoosh) masks the humming noise (though it is still audible). Actually, the humming sound sounds more like a howl now that I pay attention. With the voltage reduction cable, it is very quiet - but so is it if I reduce the voltage of the fans to 5v on the controller. Ho...

Noctua 120mm 1200RPM Fans Humming
Hi, I recently bought some of the Noctua 120mm 1200RPM fans after reading all the rave reviews about it. I noticed that all 3 fans that I have produce a humming sound that is very audble at around 7v - 9v. This hum makes the fan at 7v actually louder to me than the Nexus at 12v. I'm using the fans w...

Samsung HD501LJ
I just saw that a local distributor here has the Samsung HD501LJ for ordering. It's listed as being 500GB and having a 16MB cache. ETA is 1 November.
I tried searching on google but didn't find anything on this drive. Does anyone know more about it? Is it part of the T166 series?

Ok, I just recently uncovered the top blow hole and the noise from the rear case fan area has dropped a lot! Maybe it was CR after all? Now I just have a filter stuck on it to prevent dust from getting in. Temps still appear to be the same so it doesn't look like the airlow path has been affected mu...

Can't remove Antec P180 side panel!
My P180's left side panel has always been really tight and hard to remove. In fact I broke the 2 front plastic clips while trying to remove the panel a few days after I bought it. I've stuck back the clips with superglue, but now I want to remove the panels and am having trouble again. I don't want ...

I ordered mine a few months back. It came in one of those plastic hard disk containers. The seek noise is incredibly noisy, but at least it's still working. As for drive reliabiliy, we have had our fair share of Maxtor and Seagate drives gone bad at work. I don't think any one is more reliable than ...

Does the P180 rear fan grill need removing?
Ok I've just finished migrating my system to an Antec P180. Now the loudest component in my system is the rear case fan - a Nexus 120mm running at 7v and mounted with EAR grommets (which was hard as hell to install). I have the top blow hole covered up. My question is whether removing the rear fan g...
