OK, so I got the motherboard, the CPU, and my XP-120 from the previous computer. Problem is, I bought the CPU OEM and it doesn't come with the retentation bracket. So I can't seem to mount the XP-120 onto the motherboard (Gigabyte DS3). I don't even remember how I got the bracket to mount the XP-120...

Thermalright XP-120 and Core Duo 2

I have the XP-120 right now on a P4 Northwood. Will that fit with the new Core Duo 2 chips? Also, is there a big difference between the Ultra-120 and XP-120? Thanks!

actually, i'm in Sunny SoCal myself, too. i guess i'll be visiting Fry's after work today.

so these brackets are standard from Intel and not something specific to Asus?

is there any place that would sell retention brackets for asus motherboards? i have no idea where i put my original bracket. my previous heatsink was an alpha and it didn't need the bracket.

Problem putting XP-120 on Asus board

i'm trying to put the XP-120 on my ASUS P4P800 SE board. the board is listed on thermalright's site as compatible with the XP-120 so no problems there. the problem comes in when i try to put the retention bracket on the board. i got thermalright's LGA775 RM that's made for socket 478s. the problem i...

oops.. forgot i had posted this question..haha. anyway, i went with the 3000B. it really just came down to either the Sonata II or 3000B. 2 pros for the 3000B were (1) no PSU and (2) the HDD mount direction. Sonata has that sideways thing that i guess isn't optimal for cooling the drives? the only t...

i think the biggest reason for the lower dissipation is the reduction in die size. IIRC, the G70 uses a 110nm process while the 6800s were 130nm.

two items i wanted to mention. first, the casetronic stuff. http://www.casetronic.com/Products/Products_Main.asp. i used to run a travla-c137 and it was pretty good. the case had a single 60mm fan which is pretty quiet with a fanmate. the psu is external and totally silent (ie, no fans). it fits a 3...

a word about the casetronics. in some of their cases, you get no airflow over the HDD. so the temperature could get up to 55 or something. i had one 3.5" HDD go bad in mine after a year. i switched to a 5400rpm 3.5" HDD and it was fine after that. though you might not need to worry if you're getting...

Will XP-120 Fit a Northwood?

i have a P4 2.6 Northwood. i'm pretty sure it's socket 478. thermalright's website says the XP-120 will fit the 478 but then towards the middle of the page, it says "Intel: Pentium-4 socket 478 3.2 GHz and above"? maybe that line refers only to the recommended fan or something, but the spacing makes...

Yes... the fewer things that can break, the better. Is there a lower model than the VIA EPIA M10000; like isn't there a model witha fanless cpu cooler already installed (it looks like that one has a fan) not that noise will be an issue, i'm just curious. that looks good, 1 pci slot for the modem, 2...

with regards to the video card, which games are you going to play? the ATIs dominate in the HL2 stuff while the Nvidias dominate in the Doom3 stuff.

also, if you're going to run linux, the ATI driver support is horrid.

ditto on the SATA over IDE. as far as the video card, IIRC, the 6600 GT is much better than the 6600. something like a 30% to 45% performance increase depending on the game. also, are you getting PCI-E or AGP? i guess that really depends on which mobo you get. edit: http://graphics.tomshardware.com/...

Sonata II or 3700 BQE?

hi, so i've finally decided to upgrade my case (old SX-830) to something new this summer. the P180 is out of the question due to its size and also price. basically, i'm trying to decide between the 3700 BQE or Sonata II. the sonata is about 1.5" shorter, which is a definite plus since size matters. ...

Quiet Case (and PSU) for Mini-ITX

hi, i have a mini-itx computer currently running in a CK-1010 [1]. it's got a 150W PSU, which is plenty for the system. i just have the board, RAM, and a 3.5" hard drive. however, the PSU is louder than i'd like it. it's nothing compared to my full tower but at night, it's not exactly silent. i've b...
