My MacBook had the 60 gb SATA 5400.2 momentus. It was quiet and didn't vibrate. Then it suffered a fatal hard drive crash doing nothing but sitting on the table. So I put in a 7200 in there, and returned it to the store and paid the restocking fee. The entire notebook was vibrating and humming. Curi...

The iMac has 3 fans inside it, in addition to the hard drive. It might be quiet, but for how long? Fans wear out and these are not replacement fans you can get from the local shop on the corner. I have a hard drive enclosure 2.5 for travelling with, and when it's turned on even when it's inside it's...

Spotted: New fanless notebook

Fujitsu Lifebook p7120
Fanless, backlighting of LCD is by LEDs instead of fluorescents and the hard drive in the unit is a 1.8".

Now to see what Apple brings out in January.

An external enclosure worked remarkably well for noise

I bought a Vantec Nexstar 3, the fancy new ones that come in 4 different colours, for portability. I put in the 30 gig deathstar 75 gxp drive that was loud both seek wise, and vibration buzzing and whining motor into it. It got much much quieter. I was kind of shocked. I guess 18 gauge or whatever t...

On passively cooled CPUs and their motherboards

I was sitting here thinking, none of the modern CPUs can be cooled passively for the most part.. with the exception of stuff that will come down the pike in the future. So I was sitting here thinking about all the old systems that are possibly still good, but then I realized, most of them belong in ...

So my S12 330w is working.

The difference in CPU temperature is good for hmm, 7, possibly 8 degrees C in idle temp because of the 120mm fan over the CPU compared to the Phantom. The PSU is SMALL.. and it's light. But it does seem well put together, and the voltages are very good. It's the newer version with the ADDA fan and t...

Silicon Acoustics has the new version 330w S12 now.

I was waiting till it arrived, but it's arrived now, and I've ordered it.

It's the 330w version with the aluminum capacitors.

So hopefully when it arrives at my house I'll have better luck with it than I did with the previous 2 PSU attempts.

Rusty, why a 430?

From your rough wattage math you only come up to 216 watts..

Why not go with a 330w S12 as a choice instead? It's cheaper, and you can potentially benefit from a higher efficiency curve.

Pioneer drives are usually the quietest but I don't like their firmwares at this present point in time.

I have a NEC 3520 burner, and it is louder at reading than the Pioneer 120 dvdrom I have, etc.

But yes, the case does make a difference.

Anyone going to try the Fortron Zen Fanless?

I asked Fortron if it's the same circuit board as the Green Power, and they said no.

That said, the unit is still interesting.

Anyone going to try it? It's already available and in-stock in North America. Cheaper than a Phantom too.

Perhaps even more impressive however is the unique Twin Turbo design which changes the power consumption and clock speed of the CPU on the fly according to the required CPU utilization. Ok here's the situation.. increasingly, I'm finding the room full of a 'electronics' smell. Not burning, just a 'hot equipment' smell, mildly fumey Problem is, the smell bothers me. Phantom owners question about heat

I was wondering, when your supply runs warm, do you find that it generates a mild odour? Not a burning smell, but an electronics smell?

Unless it's some of the other junk surrounding me. I think it's the PSU though.

Hi, I'm asking this question because I'm going to soon get a dual temp monitor and defan my 8500, and since I will be using the bezel to set baseline 'before and after' values with the case open and closed, I want to use the other probe for the Phantom so I can monitor the temperature of the casing....
