Yes they are expensive and hard to get.

You may consider their design though. Especially the exhaust seems a minor concern in their design - it focusses on sucking enough cool air through the CPU heatsinks and on the PSU.

This german firm developed some specialised kits for the Mac G4. Maybe is gives you some ideas from the accompanying manuals ... It is surprising to see the Zalman company risking all their goodwill on their latest offerings. The review is thorough and the conclusions seem fair to me. It is a real shame though because the looks are very good.

Your idea is quite innovative. The weak spot seems to be the combination of client functionality with server functionality. Your idea poses many risks for the data through the terminal sessions running client activities on the server (damaging files and settings). It seems better to me to get an old...

What about single PCI NIC's with dual or quad ports? I am using a HP nc150t PCI gigabit switch+NIC switch myself and it works fine (your epia will support two of these on a double-PCI riser). I am not sure whether your firewall software will support it however. I bought one new for about 80-100 EUR ...

In the UK you may find JMC fans through Supermicro suppliers - i.e. http://www.boston.co.uk/. Ask for "FAN-0076".

If you already have a PSU with a 12cm fan, you could consider to remove the case ... (not everybodies cup of tea ...) The ease of connecting stuff and staying connected is definetely better with the IO to the top. You are right about that. I have found a solution too: Imagine the connectors pointing...

@DyJohnY The design I suggested actually has the exhaust away from the user if the user has the PC to his/her left side. The design can be used without fans since none of the hot components are in line (except for the harddrives and the PSU). This requires something like a NCU-2000 to cool the CPU h...

The inverted setup allows you to have your exhaust fans in the side panel (the side not facing the user of course). Your setup could work with three 12 cm fans in the bottom as intake. For greater airflow another three exhaust fans in the side panel can be added. Also consider having the PCI slots a...

@ JanW Actually I did consider heat tolerance but I did not mention it, because one imho should stay clear of such temperatures (where heat tolerance becomes an issue) anyway. Maybe I should be a bit more elaborate on my idea (of course I am reinventing the wheel here). The case can act as a chimney...

@ JanW The point I could have made is: if the PSU does not dissipate more heat than the CPU, it is not illogical to put it in front of the CPU. Since it is my experience that folding@home does not push a CPU to the max, it is my guestimate the heat dissipated by your PSU is lower but quite close to ...

Just one other thing to share ... It seems a lot of people stake their faith on RAID. This is good, because a system with RAID is much better secured against harddisk failure. Interesting idea (PSU > CPU airflow) and it would not be very difficult if your case allows you to put your PSU in the bottom and at the front. Personally I like redundancy so I would add another 12 cm midships, as exhaust or at the top. For optimum results I think you should get rid of the PSU's or...

PHT 3600 has yet tot impress me

Just installed a PHT 3600 this weekend. It seemed good value. However, for the moment I think it is not an improvement over the standard Intel solution. I have to admit though that I have silenced several components at the same time - so it might be relatively as loud as the Intel solution. It now i...
