Questions on Seasonic 460W Fanless
So...my power supply has become the noisiest thing in my case (at idle). I am looking at the 460W Seasonic fanless supply. I have an Antec P180. There is probably half an inch above the power supply to the divider between the bottom chamber of the case and the main chamber. There is a fan in front o...

Re: Antec ISK 100 Mini-ITX Case
Doh! Would it make any difference to hard drive temps if it were an Atom or Fusion system, with lower heat-generation vs. the SPCR test? The fan I could potentially just remove from the system, and just rely on the Atom or Fusion fan for cooling. Would have considered this case for a light-use serve...

Re: what component can i change in my build to reduce power
I am waiting on the new Intel D510 Atom motherboards. Glancing at the D510MO specs, it still only has 2x SATA. Are there going to be boards D510 boards with more? If not, why not just use a D945GSEJT and cut your power usage in half again? I still don't see the value of an atom with a non-mobile ch...

Re: Small, silent, green DIY NAS: suggestions?
After passings hours reading this and other forums, blogs, and after long pondering I came out with... nothing. I want to build a NAS able to manage up to 4 2.5" disks which is silent, small and "green". Since I want to be able to use it for some other stuff too I decided for a "generalist" linux d...

Re: WD green - really quieter then WD blue?
Apologies for starting yet another thread about this drive, but just wanted to check before taking the plunge. Just had a look at the reviews for the wd green 1.5TB drive and the WD blue 500GB, and apparently the green measured in at 1dB lower. Is it really that quiet? I've currently got a 160GB WD...

Can I run Atom without fan?
I understand that most Atom MB's come with a small fan, on the chipset, I think. I am looking at building a low-power server. I do NOT plan on running a GUI. Since I guess that the graphics is what pushes temperature on the chipset, would I be okay running without the fan in my usage scenario? I gue...

Recommended replacement for AM2 stock cooler?
I recently put a AMD x4 3GHz 95W CPU into a new system. I am using the stock fan, and at low speed, it a barely audible rush of sound that is easy to ignore. When it spins up briefly for higher CPU usage, it is also easy to ignore if it goes back down relatively quickly. It's in a way audible feedba...

Impressions on 2nd drive
I put the second drive in my Antec P180 case. Under my desk beside me, it's a quietish system...faint fan noise, but nothing intrusive. I can't hear the new drive over the fans. Excellent. I'm still a little puzzled by the noisier seeks from the first drive in the USB enclosure, since the drive it r...

Samsung F2 EcoGreen 1TB First Impression
I bought two Samsung 1TB F2 EcoGreen hard drives. I put the first drive into a Themaltake Silver River DUO external USB enclosure. After the SPCR review, I was expecting the drive to be near-silent, even if adding another platter versus the reviewed 500GB version. At startup, there is a bit of a gri...

Advice on NAS
Any advice on a quiet NAS, either BYOD or other? I am looking at a number of products with support for either 2 or 4 disks, but there is not a lot of information on power moding or noise for comparison. I thought someone at SilentPCReview might have some experience and advice. Any advice is apprecia...

Something else to consider...
Athena Power now has a back plane that puts 4 2.5" disks into 1 5.25" bay. Especially from a noise standpoint, that is interesting.
(For me, I would have to buy new 2.5" drives versus re-using my existing 3.5" drives, which makes this less of an option for me, but I thought I'd share!)

Advice on case for small NAS
I currently have a "Server" PC that among other things is a NAS for my network. I built this using a P180 mainly because of the available 3.5" bays + good airflow to house 1 system drive plus 4 data drives in RAID5. The other requirement was a case that is relatively quiet, or could be made so, whic...

The motherboard may have an option
I use a stock cooler, and the motherboard controls fan speed based on CPU temperature. This was disabled by default in the BIOS. I have no idea if this is a common feature or not.

Problems running 3D with HIS 1900gt graphics card
1. Did you do a fresh install of the OS, and download the latest DirectX and patches?
2. Is your power supply capable of supporting the graphics card?

How to cool Silent SLI/Crossfire video cards
I am looking for advice on cooling/noise considerations for running a pair of passively cooled video cards in SLI or Crossfire, such as http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/VGA/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=2235 I have a P180 case, with the three Tri-cools at low setting. I also have a couple of N...

Best, fanless, comparable upgrade from a Radeon 8500
I am planning on a more extensive upgrade late in the year or early next (after more details on the AMD 4x4 emerge). Until then, my current graphics card is a Radeon 8500, and it is very noisy. My question is...is there a cheap, fanless AGP video card that would offer comparable performance to the R...

Other factors
Just something else to take into consideration--the Seagates usually have 5 year warranties whereas Western Digital is usually at 3 years. The RE2 line from WD is about the same as the SE16 in terms of accoustics (from reviews that I've read), is a little more expensive, but has the 5 year warranty....

1. For the connectors, I do not care that they connect to the motherboard, only that most fans that I look at have the 3-pin connectors, and I have a couple of those available on the motherboard. But for 4 fans, I would need to connect the others to the 4-pin connectors off the power supply. I did n...

Using more case fans than # of 3-pin connectors on MB
I have a case that has locations for 4 80 mm fans (2 in front, 2 in back). I am getting ready to swap out the ones that came with the case for quieter ones, maybe the Panaflo. The motherboard has only two 3-pin fan connectors. I know I can hack two of the connectors and connect it to the power suppl...
