updated my original post here: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewto ... 693#161693

It's been about 19 months and my Phantom 350 is still going strong. Still running 24/7 on PVR duty per the original configuration.

Ooops... now I've done it.

Sorry to say that I'm taking my main system and putting it on pure PVR/media server duty. In these summer months I need to run the exhaust fan 100% and loud to keep this beast cool, so I may have to crank the folding right down to keep it cool & quiet. Possible drop from 3000ppw down to 1700 or so (...

What HD do they use? Will a HD swap void the warranty? What's the general policy with changing HD in laptops, not only Apple? My 12" iBook came with a Fujitsu MHT2040AT 30 gig drive which is pretty quiet. Low on the seek noise, and I can't even hear it spin up. A HD swap on iBooks is very involved,...

give dTemp a try. It works on my Raid, and seems accurate.

edit - though it sees the raid as one drive... it does not give a temp for each drive.

iPods are just like Macs - it's fairly easy to find an mp3 player or PC that is cheaper, faster, nicer looking or smaller, but you always, always lose more than you gain. :P I'm not too sure... in general, yes (I'm not trying to start a whole mac vs PC flame thread again here... it's been argued fr...

In general, though, everything is a lot snappier in OSX with more ram. Especially Expose...and if you're not using that, you should be! I'd played around with my brothers eMac for a year, and it wasn't until I saw the OS X demo on the apple site that I saw what expose was. I've just got the bone-stock 256meg for now. I haven't had any crashing issues, but I do see how stretched the memory is. A lot of page-file usage slowing things down a bit.

fairly slow opening programs for the first time, will additional ram help speed this up?

Well... the new (replacement) iBook is now up and running. I've only heard the fan run once during the hardware test, otherwise it's completely silent. I like the keyboard on this thing too, with the exception of the missing (dedicated) <home> and <end> keys... makes editing a little bit harder. I'm...

Silent for the Zalman 7000 series seems to be somewhere below 1300rpm (in my system at least). I'm just guessing as I'm not running it off the motherboard header anymore. I installed a Sunbeam Rheobus instead to handle all the fans. Rough figures... CPU fan is running around 8V (I'll turn it down to...

I don't have any dampening on my hard drives (all 4 of them). The loudest component is the CPU cooler. The Nexus exhaust fan is about at quiet as you can find, it's normally running at a full 12 volts to deal with the Phantom 350 (passive) PSU and admittedly hot 9800 Pro. Still, at 12 volts, it's qu...

I was about to ask what was going on with team SPCR and our daily/weekly point decline, but checked the summaries on other teams too. Everybody seems to be slowing down. If that was my machine, my next steps would be Phantom and maybe Zalman fanless on the video card. I wasn't crazy about the Truepower or Noisetaker PSU's that I had earlier... with the phantom all I can hear is a slight humm when I put my ear to the PSU.

The DVD/CD-RW is definitely not quiet, but other than that it seems to be pretty darn quiet, at least the quietest laptop I've ever owned. I need to give huge props to Apple fo...

Don't compare to others results - look at your own.

You've got a very good decrease at idle (8 degrees) and a good decrease at load (I'm assuming 6-8 degrees).

At the same time, it's likely a whole lot quieter than your stock HSF, right?

Prime95 is useful as a memory tester first, a loading program 2nd. Don't be suprised if P95 fails. It's just a sign that your memory is not 100% stable. Is the screensaver a blank screen, or graphical?

Blank screen shouldn't cause a jump.

What are the chances that on screensaver it's running hot due to graphics, but the temp doesn't update until it wakes from slumber?
