Just an update to this aging thread to say I recently purchased a second 80G 7200.7 ata model and it is equally as quiet as my original one purchased last November. Further, my original drive hasn't deteriorated noise wise by developing any high pitched idle whine like some models can. Needless to s...

I've just done the same with two GeForce 2 cards, one a GF2 Pro and the other a GF2 MX400 that both had noisey fans on. GF2 Pro: http://www.nedslider.freeuk.com/gf2pro-hs.jpg GF2 MX400: http://www.nedslider.freeuk.com/gf2mx-hs.jpg The GF2 Pro has a 65x50x15mm sink on it and the GF2 MX400 is about 50...

Thanks Stig, Another factor to consider is case cooling. I use mine in an open system, on shelves on an open rack so case cooling isn't a consideration for me. But maybe the noisetaker with it's two fans would give better case cooling than the older nexus design (not something I'd factored into my a...

I recently bought the Nexus 300W together with a Noisetaker 370W. Both are quiet PSU's and I'm really pleased with both. The voltage rails are slightly better on my Noisetaker, but I am pushing the Nexus quite hard. Overall I'd say the noisetaker is a better PSU but I paid nearly double for it compa...

Re: Unusually quiet Seagate 7200.7 made-in-China 80G HDD
This China 7200.7 80G is very slightly quieter than several Barracuda-IV 40G drives I have and it has less vibration. Has anyone else experienced this?? I've now had a chance to do a direct side-by-side subjective comparison of my recent China 7200.7 80GB PATA drive with a Barracuda IV 80GB drive a...

I bought one in the UK about 4 weeks back and it's also labelled "Product of China". It's the 80GB ATA model. Mine is extremely quiet in operation. It's idle whine is medium pitched (far better than some of the high pitched whines from other manufacturers) and is just audible from about 6 inches in ...

Re: Why does the screen saver still active?
Here is my big question: Why does windows still run the screen saver with the monitor in sleep/suspend/whatever? All it does is make the video card and CPU hot. Is anyone aware of a utility to turn off the screen saver when the monitor is put to sleep? Just set the screensaver to "none" and then in...

Thanks :) I guessed the MX400 shouldn't be too much of a problem as there are passive models available, but I don't know if there were ever passive models of the GeForce2 Pro card. The fan died on it a while ago and it got very hot and I started having stability problems before I notice it and repla...

What size heatsink for passive cooling on these cards?
Hi, I have nVidia GeForce2 Pro and Geforce2 MX400 cards that both have noisy fans on. I have a selection of old heatsinks and want to remove the old HSF's and epoxy passive heatsinks on in their place. So what sort of size of heatsink do these cards require for passive cooling? Can anyone link to pi...

Passive Northbridge cooling for nForce2 motherboards?
Hi, I'm wanting to quiet down my PC's and the next thing to go is the northbridge fan. Currently I run one board at 185fsb and another at 166fsb. Both are currently cooled by Iceberq chipset coolers and I'm looking for passive replacements. Any thoughts on the Thermalright NB-1 but without the fan a...

The problem is because it's air bourne noise (not vibrational) the only effective way to reduce/elimiate it is to totally encase the drive in soundproofing material. The problem then becomes heat as the drive can no longer dissipate it's heat (sound proofing materials also tend to be good thermal in...

The only difference appears to be that the 7k80 weighs a little less and draws a little less power than the 7k250. This is probably because the 7k80 was designed to only be 80GB max. The Hitachi naming scheme appears to be [Rotational Speed in kRPM][max # of GB] 7k80 7k250 That's about what I thoug...

7k80 is a 2.5" form-factor drive (ie. laptop-size), as opposed to traditional 3.5" drives like the 7k250. Noise-related information on these new Hitachis is still very limited, AFAIK. I don't think it is, it's listed as a 3.5" drive: http://www.simply.co.uk/productinformation/75483/WW/HITACHI_7K80_...

Hitachi 7K80 and 7K250 - what's the difference?
Hi, I'm looking for a new quiet HD to replace a very whiney Maxtor D740X-6L. I want an 80GB PATA model. Noise/price are of main concern. The Samsung drives are too expensive here in the UK. I've found a good price on a Seagate 7200.7 but wasn't sure about it as there seem to be confilicting reports ...

Hi, I'm not sure I can really answer your question but I can say this; I recently bought a noisetaker 375 AX(G)-SFMA with active PFC and I'm really pleased with it. The noisiest thing in that system is now the maxtor HD. Whether it is quiet enough for you is subjective, but for me the (lack of) nois...

I'm wondering if it's the board or the psu. I think SATA drives require more power and most seem to be using SATA in RAID on this board. I should be fine with even 3 regular IDE HD drives. SATA or not, hdds take about 10W each. Yes, that's true. But also bear in mind at boot up when the drives firs...

Sleepy, Here's my comments posted in your other thread: Rather than having just one 12V rail with, say 30-40A on it, some manufacturers are splitting this into two seperated individually regulated 12V lines. They tell us this is to seperate electrically noisy components such as disk/drive motors fro...

It doesn't really matter whether it's two rails or one so long as you have sufficient power on the 12V. The distriibution of power within modern computers is changing. Nea...

Yes, mine is quiet - the loudest thing in that system is now my maxtor HD. MikeC also gave it a good rating for noise in his review. Of course a lot will depend on the ambient temp but that will be pretty much the same for any supply though. Mine never ramps up the fan even with the adjustable knob ...
