Re: Eye opening and obviously wrong ad at Fry's

Fry's ads are full of mis-prints. Whenever you go into the store and look at the cork board where they post their current ads, there are always a few notes with the retractions on them, posted right next to the ads themselves. Sometimes they even put the same note of the shelf where the item is loca...

Re: replacement fan for HP G60T-600

Compressed air is much more effective than a vacuum. Buy a can, open your laptop(removing the keyboard might suffice to get access to the cpu cooler) and use that. But wedge something against the fan blades so it doesn't rotate when you blowing on it. The compressed air stream can cause the blades ...

FWIW, different mobos will have the PSU header in different locations than the board in your prototype. This would allow the second 80x25mm fan to clear without interference.

Re: Stumped on how to silence this hard drive setup

If you're stuck on keeping your two existing drives, I'd suspend one of them in the empty 5.25" bay and mount the other on the floor of the case using a sorbothane-type pad.

I'd also look at that Thermaltake PSU as a significant source of noise.

Re: Shuttle DS61, any opinions about it?

Interesting, but I can't see how those 60mm fans could ever be very quiet. It gets some decent reviews on Newegg though, although it's silence doesn't seem to be a priority to any of the reviewers. Personally, if I was stuck on that size case, I'd look at something like this case: http://www.mini-bo...

Re: Basic Quality Build Music Server Only

No need for a monitor. You run your server "headless" and access from any other local computer using MS Remote Desktop, or one of the third-party solutions. Onboard video supplied by the board/CPU is more than enough. You can easily build yourself something along these lines: http://www.computeraudi...

The headless DH77EB + i3-3220 "Music Server" that's listed in my sig idles around 13-14W with one HDD, the NIC one undervolted Scythe fan and one USB peripheral. Another fan adds 2-ish W, another HDD adds 4-5W. For comparison, the previous iteration of this server was running the same peripherals, b...

Re: HDPLEX H5.TODD Fanless HTPC Case

Is VRM cooling an issue in these passive cases? I am thinking about an HTPC build with an ASUS P8H77-I ITX, Intel i3-3225, dual tuner card plus HDD/SSD. No overclocking. The heatpipes would pass over the chipset heatsink and SATA ports on the right. Won't said heatpipes block access to all the SATA...

Re: Ultimate VortexBox case? ITX, 5.5" full-size optical, 1

I used one of those MSI barebones systems as my music server for a few years. It worked great. I used it oriented vertically so that convection would aid the cooling. I retired it a year or so ago and it was still running 100% when I took it offline. Used it with a 2TB WD Green and a full-size DVDro...

Having a choice, which one is better? Slot-load, no front signs, no protruding parts, more complex mechanically. Tray-load, simpler mechanics, proven reliability (good old PATA drive), some sign up front. Being a "form follows function" kind of guy, I'd go with the tray-load version. And if ...

I'd look for the WD blue 2.5" drives of that capacity. I've used the 250 & 500gb drives extensively and they are very quiet. IIRC, they also had (have?) a 320gb drive in that series.

My gut feeling is that you're never going to find that one from a retail vendor. It was originally around about 5-6 years ago and is probably long gone by now. Your only chance would be finding an old used one for sale somewhere.

Those Pico-PSU P4 ATX cables are always too short. I just purchase one of those $3 extension cables to add on. Those cables are available at all the usual case-mod supply stores.

1) Are you sure your PSU is correctly connected to the mobo? Are you using the 12V ATX connector?

2) Is your start button hooked up correctly?

3) Do you have a conventional PSU to use temporarily in it's place?
