Re: Fractal Define R3 USB 3.0 upgrade kit

I finally got around to doing this today, since I picked up a USB 3.0 PCIe card. I ran into no issues routing the fake eSATA and fat USB 3.0 cables via the front panel and over the top of the top 5.25" drive bay. It did take a little patience and adjusting/fidgeting, but I didn't have to run the cab...

Re: Fractal Define R3 USB 3.0 upgrade kit

Wanted to follow up on this. My USB 3.0 upgrade kit arrived today from NewEgg. This is NewEgg's fault, not that of FD, but the upgrade kit box was completely smashed in, the cables were hanging out from the end, and the screws were missing. I eventually found the screw bag at the bottom of the packi...

Re: Fractal Define R3 USB 3.0 upgrade kit

Because the kits where produced and awaiting distribution here in Sweden when we found out the problem we recalled everything that was shipped out to local resellers and reworked everything manually. This was done before we shipped anything to Newegg and we still have not heard of any complaints of...

Re: Fractal Define R3 USB 3.0 upgrade kit

I mailed NewEgg, since the product on their site shows the older (faulty) version with black screws, just to try and find out what exactly they were selling. Their response indicates more or less that as a customer you're playing Russian roulette with your purchase. This is exactly why changing mod...

Re: Western Digital Livewire Powerline Networking Kit

Might I recommend SPCR review the Zyxel PLA-407 powerline adapters? Supposedly these things perform amazingly well (way better than the WD product), and the latency is much lower / consistent too (something like 1-2ms), with no packet loss. There's a review of this product over on the DSLR/BBR forum...

Re: Electronic Whining Noise Solutions Research Project

Three things you could investigate: 1) Any Core i7 (possibly i5) with C-state support enabled -- specifically, C-state transitioning between C3/C6. On every Core i7 system I have (one HP laptop (not sure which rev/stepping), and one desktop (i7-2600K, rev D2 / stepping 7)), I have to turn this featu...

Re: Fractal Define R3 USB 3.0 upgrade kit

FD's response here on the forum is the same I just got in Email. Folks here on SPCR who bought the kit in question and had problems should chime in here with feedback, etc.. The screw length issue seems to be addressed (thanks FD!), but the routing hole ordeal needs some further discussion. I urge S...

Thanks for the info, Haych. I'm going to reach out to Fractal Design and point them to this thread. The fact they haven't addressed this after ~6 months is unacceptable. I'm absolutely certain changes could be made to the upgrade kit to make it fully compatible with the boxes its intended to be used...

Re: Fractal Define R3 USB 3.0 upgrade kit

The last post in this thread was 6 months ago. Questions: 1. Did/had anyone actually taken the time to contact Fractal Design about the design flaw in their USB 3.0 upgrade kit? (Re: cables now have to go through the top 5.25" drive bay rather than through the proper routing hole) 2. Has anyone purc...

Re: Quiet DVDRW for HTPC?

The "fan" alexb is referring to isn't actually a fan, but the noise the drive makes during high-speed rotation of the disc (gradually getting louder once you exceed around 8-12x or so). With non-ball-bearing mechanism drives, the drive is extremely quiet up to a certain point (then the drive starts ...

Re: Is it possible to check the "usage" on an Intel SSD?

Be aware certain SMART attributes on the Intel X25 series, X18 series, 320 series, and 510 series SSDs are clearable via a vendor-specific SMART test command (command 0x40). They reset to value 0x00000000ffff (65535), then after approximately 30-60 seconds, start incrementing again from zero. You ca...

This drive is almost certainly (~80% sure) a rebranded LiteOn drive, which means it's a rebranded Optiarc drive. Here's some added validation: http://club.myce.com/f43/plextor-px-l890sa-316174/ "So what?" These drives appear to use ball bearing mechanisms, which makes them extremely loud during spin...

Based on other forum threads and overall advice, I went ahead and bought a Corsair CMPSU-520HX PSU. Upon arrival, I didn't even have to plug it in to determine the length of the 4-pin 12V power cable was too short -- measurements matched that of the NeoHE 550! I then did some more research on these ...

Antec P182 - LEDs showing through right side of case

Am I the only one who finds blue LEDs incredibly annoying due to being too bright? :-) The "problem" I'm trying to solve has to do with the hard disk LED showing through the right side of the case, due to the air intake grill/strip along the right front edge. See here: http://www.antec.com/images/40...

Yeah, that's what I suspected... Practically, if I decide to replace the vents I will be left with a hole in the backplate? You got it. You could always leave the switch block mounted in the back, but just cut the wires off from the fans. The size of the switch block/hole in the back is (WxH) 1.5"x...

Antec P182, NeoHE, and P5N-E SLI

There's a ton of related threads about the P182 and PSU cable lengths, but I think mine's a bit unique. I hope Mike Chin reads this thread since he has some pull with Antec. I bought an Antec P182 case and have an Antec NeoHE 550 PSU. I'll bold this because it's important: Antec makes both of these ...
