Re: Kotetsu with washers cause high temps on i5-8400

I would have preferred a 400W or even a 350W PSU to run this computer at higher efficiency on the PSU, but that might also make its fan run at a higher RPM since the PSU would run at a "higher" load. This computer just needs the hard-wired mains and CPU cables (no discrete graphics card or SATA driv...

Re: Kotetsu with washers cause high temps on i5-8400

Thanks for the feedback! I re-mounted the Kotetsu without the 1151 spacers. I cleaned the Kotetsu and the CPU using Arctic Silver ArctiClean. Like before, I used Arctic Silver 5 and "tinted" both the Kotetsu and the CPU prior to adding a vertical line of thermal paste per Arctic Silver instructions....

Kotetsu with washers cause high temps on i5-8400

I just installed a Scythe Kotetsu on an Intel Core i5-8400 in an Asus ROG Strix H360-I Gaming motherboard. I used the 1151 spacers and could still twist/rotate the Kotetsu even after fully-tightening the mounting screws. I am thinking about reinstalling the Kotetsu without the 1151 spacers, but I am...

I have the Abit An8-Ultra. My first AMD system. It's a good board though there is a bit of a mess with the latest nForce4 drivers and the BIOS, I think this is an issue all the way around with nForce4. The Asus Ultra board has to have the latest driver update before the BIOS flash as well. The othe...

In that config, the video and audio will probably share the same IRQ. Some people try and avoid this. Thanks for the info. So what, if anything, can I do to avoid this situation? I still have to plug in the cards into two of the three PCI slots. Also, I forgot to mention that I'm planning on subscr...

Anyone use the ViewSonic VP191b?

I've narrowed down my choices for a 19" LCD monitor to the ViewSonic VP191b (latest version) and the Samsung 193P+-Silver. Since the availability of Samsung seems to be rather scarce and its price is around $600, I'm just about set to buy the ViewSonic. Newegg listed it at $425 a couple of weeks ago...

So the new version is quieter? It was never quite clear... I counted 7 blades on my PSU fan, I don't know if that is the new or the old version. I believe the Adda fan is supposed to be a tad noisier, but overall it isn't supposed to be that noticable noise-wise. As far as determining what fan your...

I didn't know it was the older version, but I reasoned that it'd be okay if it was, because if it malfunctioned, I could always RMA it and get the revised S12. Right no...

I decided to go for a Gigabyte GV-NX66128DP, as I was turned off by the extra Molex power connector of the passive XFX 6600 256MB and I figured I don't really need dual DVI or 256MB of graphics-card RAM anyway. I was seriously tempted by the Gigabyte GV-RX80256D , since it is now only $169 after a $...

Yes, but how do you break a cable? Unless, you pull on the wire itself and not the plug, I see no reason to pay money for any kind of premium SATA cable. I may be wrong, but I think it's more an issue of the connectors becoming loose rather than the cable breaking. I've no firsthand experience with...

LH, you might want to reconsider buying an SATAII hard drive. 1) There is no added performance benefit, a 7200RPM drive tops out at about 70MB/s, far below SATA I's 150MB/s limit. 2) SATA II hard drives are more expensive for nothing extra 3) Some of the "features" (like NCQ) can actually reduce pe...

However, I don't think the 6800 comes passively-cooled (in a PCI-Express version) and the Gigabyte passively-cooled X800 is about $230. But I don't think I need that po...

6600, X700, or X700 Pro graphics card?

I'm shopping for a new mainstream graphics card, and I'm considering the 6600, X700, and X700 Pro. I know the 6600 GT beats all of those three, but I don't want to spend $200 and don't want its extra heat. Since I'm not a gamer, I figure I can get by with a sub-6600GT card. I will be using a Hauppau...

When using the saw-and-crush technique, you really only need to crush the tubes on the two "thick" corners. For the two "thin" corners, you can just grip the tube firmly and then bend it down, using a motion similar to snapping a twig. This will snap off the tube cleanly and leave clearance all arou...
