For a really quick and dirty solution, glue will work. Glue is very often used in the industry (though not always on CPUs). I would expect temperatures to go up 5-15ºC from grease. Also, I would strongly suggest some RTV to connect the corners of the heatsink to the motherboard for extra support.

If you get any problems, it will probably be in the form of system instability (ie OS won't install without crashing)...

While you pick on the PCIe slot, I think its more curious that the mega heatsink more or less negates the value of the tiny motherboard! I did think the heatsink in the goldfish bowl was really cute though.

If you check the MSI mini-ITX boards, you'll noticed that a few have a 2nd slot beside the first one. The second slot is not usable in any standard ATX form factor case but works if you have a bunch of riser cards going somewhere. The only other board make I've known that does that is Kontron (which...

This place has had a good selection of PCIe risers for a couple of years now... I like them because they don't mind single orders and the odd custom part, I got them to make me a PCIe x1 to x16 right angle connector ribbon riser.

However I think overall it would be cheaper and more effective to just go to the electric car. I think ethanol production on the scale of fueling North America's great automobile will always be a pipe dream.

Either will work if you have the right type of DC-DC power supply. The LinITX site you referenced has them under "Power Supply Boards", make sure you get a compatible output voltage on the AC-DC with the input voltage on the DC-DC. A lot of the DC-DC power supplies tend to be 12V in, but there are a...

It sounds like you are tripping a current switch in the AC-DC brick. I had an issue similar to that and one of the solutions I had thought of but never tried was putting a big 12V rechargeable battery in line with the AC-DC brick. A giant capacity might also work. Or neither solution will work.

In SPCR terms, I think the benefits would be more subtle and come in the form of thinner fins (thus presenting less air resistance) and less need for heatpipes to distribute heat evenly across the cooling surface area. It would be neat to have a thermal super conductor, then you could do some silly ...
