I'm using an ATI FireGL V3400 PCI-E that I got on eBay for $61 including shipping. According to ATITool it idles at 40c and reaches 54c under load. The fan spins at 26% and has never ramped up. I can't hear it. 3DMARK06 score is about 2000. V3300 and V3100 will be very lame. V3400 is entry level. Th...

Thanks for all the replies. It looks like Media Player is only using 4% of the CPU, so I concur that a sound card would not be worth it based on computing performance. Since it was asked, the idle temp is 37°C. All my fans are on one 5V/12V switch. In the rare event I play a game I just flip the swi...

Onboard Sound Vs. Sound Card

Listening to internet radio increases my CPU temp by 6°C with nothing else running. Could it make a difference to add a separate sound card? What are the benefits? I'd prefer to not make any other changes to my system as it's usually cool, quiet, and sucking up only 155 watts with 2 LCD's (according...

I bought right and left Wiss tin snips and also a cheap nibbler to get the hole started. I ended up removing the front and rear grills on an Antec SLK3700AMB with the nibbler only. The snips caused too much bending. Oiling the nibbler really helps.

On my Dell 8100 I can control the operation of the 2 fans. If this is possible on the Compaq, a strategy may be to force the fan on low at startup and see if it can maintain a low enough temperature. Try to avoid playing Doom while in class.

I think people have the wrong impression - this isn't about hiccups (US spelling) or hiccoughs (UK spelling) - it's about hickups. My guess as to the meaning of this word is that it describes the increase in naivete or gullibility of a person coming from a rural setting into a metropolis. By a city...

You want to make sure you keep the voltage positive or you might unprocess some work you have already done.

Other than that I've never heard of undervolting doing damage on anything other than an inductive (motor) load. Run Prime95 to check stability.

Thanks for the reply. I agree there is an airflow problem when exhausting that much air, but the system never runs hot. Intake and exhaust grills are removed. The only reason I added switching for 12V was to cool the 9800 PRO with a NB47J when gaming. Normally I underclock the GPU and the system dra...

Exhaust fan causes PSU to intake external air

I have all my fans except the fan (1000rpm) on my Seasonic SS350 on a 5v/12v switch. When I switch to 12v for games external air is drawn in past the PSU fan. Everything is nice and cool, including the PSU. Am I going to kill my PSU fan?

I really never ever saw anyone undervolt p4's.
A modest undervolt of 1.25V on my P4 2.6C. Anything below 1.15 is not stable. CPU idles @ 37C and climbs to 52C under extended load with L1A @5V (see sig).

9800PRO with Zalman NB47J and Fan on Bracket Anyone?

I just received a 9800PRO from Crucial today and as you can imagine compared to my FireGL 8800 with a NB47J and 60MM fan on a Zalman bracket it's loud. I'll probably end up with a VGA Silencer, but, as unlikely as it seems, has anyone been successful with a 9800PRO and NB47J?

The recommended fan list says the 80mm Nexus doesn't start reliably under 7V. That's a lot of percolating before the fan kicks on. Has anyone done this mod with the Nexus?
