So was how well did this mod worked for you all on this forum? I did the mod and reduced the loudness to about 25% of what it was beforehand. Not quite silence but a big improvement. Also my left click is louder than my right click. I don't want a feather light touch where any finger pressure at all...

So how much has changed in the last five years?

2005 is when I built my rig. Then Nexus 120 mm fans and Antec cases seemed to be all the rage. Intel chips were largely out because of high energy consumption. So now it's 2010. SSDs are getting reasonably cheap, memory has gone from DDR to DDR3, there's something called USB 3.0, and everything has ...

ACPI for Fan Control in Linux?

I have three fans connected to my motherboard with three-pin connectors and just want to set them at 50% like I do with SpeedFan. Will ACPI give me the fan control I want? Has anyone here done this? Just thought I would check before I go through the pains of a custom kernel.

It's almost certainly the drive motors. My Samsung SpinPoints are soft-mounted, and when I put a finger on one I can feel it vibrating, but can't hear them. I'm betting if you soft-mount your disks, the hum will go away. That will help, but I'm trying to solve the whoosh noise too. I might enclose ...

As others have said, it's almost certainly your hard drives. How far away from the case was the microphone when you made the recording? The reason I ask is that the 120 Hz spike that you're seeing will probably be much more pronounced in a near-field recording than one from your operating position....

120 Hz is 120 times/second. This is also 7200 times/minute, which bears striking resemblance to your hard drives' rotational speed.
120 Hz is probably with in error range.

Nidecs, Seasonic, and 125 Hz

My computer includes two Samsung Nidecs, a Seasonic 350W Super Tornado Rev. 2, and an Antec 3000B. The Nidecs are hard mounted. Today I stopped my case and CPU fans and made a few recordings from the front and side of my case. The recordings were made with an MXL 990 and done so in a relatively casu...

Does that foam help to kill the whoosh noise from your Samsung? If so, where did you get the foam. Is it not helpful to put foam on the underside of the hard drive? The foam helps tremendously. With it, I have real silence - I can't hear the machine, even seeking, at a distance of about 1 meter. Th...

The noise picked up by the SM57 is from electromagnetic interference. I can't really hear it though when the mic is three feet away from the PSU.

Yes. PCs do cause microphones to pick up noise. I have an SM57 dynamic microphone w/ balanced line and it picks up some noise from the PSU and CRT. I suspect that other components inside the PC might also cause noise. I also have a Marshall MXL 990 condenser mic and it does NOT pick up audible RF no...

Two of those will work as long as you cut the tach wire on one and the two that carry the voltage on the other.

I'm not sure what the effect would be if two tach wires were routed to the same header.

Edit:

Or is this exactly what 3-pin Y-cables are for?

Running Two Fans off a Single Fan Header

My motherboard has three fan headers (3-pin). Two have variable voltage, while the other is fixed at 12v. This presented a problem for me because my system had three fans that should not be run at 12v. I solved the probelm by putting the voltage lines from the front and rear case fans in parallel an...

I don't think I'd want to put my hard drive in a pouch, put my computer in the trunk of a car, and then drive 600km. Does Suspension Reduce Whoosh Noise

My hard drives are the loudest components in my computer. They are mounted conventionally in an Antec SLK 3000B drive cage. When idling they produce a soft whoosh noise. If I remove the dive cage and hold it in my hand while the computer is running, the level of whoosh noise does not change. Will su...
