Re: With helium drives, anything above 6TB = noisy?

Have some comments on the 16TB Seagate Skyhawk that I thought I'd link here as they're a bit out of the way in an Article Discussion thread. It also has older comments on the 12TB IronWolf, 10TB Skyhawk and 10TB WD Red:

Re: Seagate's 10TB HDDs

I'm back two years later with comments on another high-capacity drive. Picked up a pair of 16TB Seagate Skyhawk AI (ST16000VE000) for backup purposes, but being the sucker for punishment that I am, I again decided to try one in my desktop as another potential replacement for my 8TB Reds. Will be bri...

Re: Seagate's 10TB HDDs

Have owned six WD80EFRX (though only two were in my system - the others are in My Book Duos). Sold one in the process of upgrading to the 10-12TB drives, which I regret as my main rig will be returning to a three HDD configuration at some point - consisting of WD80EFRX. My original comments on that ...

Re: Seagate's 10TB HDDs

Sad to conclude with the 10TB WD Red, 12TB Seagate IronWolf, and 10TB Seagate Skyhawk having all proven unacceptable in one way or another. The 10TB Red made the most promising first impression with very low motor noise and vibration, but turned out a major disappointment, with its maddeningly notic...

Re: Seagate's 10TB HDDs

Well, got my answer quicker than expected - the 10TB Red is indeed the ticking-every-second culprit. Powered down, yanked the power from the 12TB IronWolf, powered back up and didn't have to wait long for the ticking to start. Now I have the 10TB Red unplugged to observe the 12TB IronWolf in isolati...

Re: Seagate's 10TB HDDs

Someone else can buy a Barracuda Pro. I've done my part :P The tick-every-second continues this morning, so it's apparently gone all night, except now I'm not sure which drive is doing it - it felt like the 10TB Red last night, but had my finger against the drives again this morning and frankly I ca...

Re: Seagate's 10TB HDDs

Not having much luck with the latest crop of drives, it seems. Am sitting here late at night when it's nice and quiet, but being taunted by a continual tick about once a second, and it's not the 12TB IronWolf or a wall clock. It's the 10TB Red, apparently performing some sort of background maintenan...

Re: Seagate's 10TB HDDs

WD Red 10TB: Very positive first impressions for vibration and motor noise. It does however make the characteristic click/clunk about every 5 seconds when idle, also observed in the Red 6TB and 8TB. Will follow up if I have anything to add after more time with it. I just saw this review of the WD Re...

Re: Seagate's 10TB HDDs

This comparison may prove informative. I must admit I'd be interested to see how the WD Red and Hitachi He10 compare. As it happens I now have a 10TB WD Red ordered thanks to a well-timed deal. It's what I'd have preferred in the first place, but its price tag was previously 25% more than the best ...

Re: Seagate's 10TB HDDs

Spent quite some time yesterday softening the mount for the Skyhawk using some old Spire Soundpad foam, since the Fractal's rubber grommets aren't the best. It reduced the transfer of vibration, but not enough, and it's a moot point anyway as the motor noise alone is above my threshold (same is unfo...

Re: Seagate's 10TB HDDs

Vibration continues to be a significant issue with the 10TB Skyhawk, and contrary to my first impressions, motor noise has also been audible from a couple of metres away (sometimes the noise fluctuates up and down over a period of around 6 seconds, which makes it more noticable). I've now had severa...

Re: Seagate's 10TB HDDs

Second impression, sitting here on a quiet morning hearing an annoying hum, is less positive. Seems now that the drive has 'settled' a bit on its mount, it's transferring more vibration to the rest of the chassis. I'll be moving it to another bay when the 12TB IronWolf arrives and will report if tha...

Re: Seagate's 10TB HDDs

Received a 10TB Skyhawk yesterday. First impressions - much greater vibration and motor noise than my WD Red 6TB and 8TBs, but pretty quiet seeking. It's not a particularly loud drive broadly speaking, and isn't audible in my closed Fractal Mini on a carpeted floor from a couple of metres away in a ...

Re: AMD ZeroCore observations

Nothing new to report re the card becoming stuck at higher GPU voltage/memory speed - hasn't reoccured since the 13.4 drivers were installed. It's likely issues with ZeroCore will tend to fly under the radar, since it's a bit of a niche interest (the broader community of PC hardware enthusiasts will...

Couple of updates: - It's six days since I installed the Catalyst 13.4 drivers released last week, and I'm pleased to report that in that time, the card hasn't become 'stuck' at the higher GPU voltage and memory speed, whereas previously it was happening once or several times during the course of a ...

Re: AMD ZeroCore observations

Wouldn't it be better instead to somehow script things such that when youleave the system at night, it then runs all of the tasks before shutting itself down when it's finished? That can be convenient for a consistent task or two, but if there is an unpredictable array of tasks in a wide variety of...

AMD ZeroCore observations

So I picked up a just-released ASUS 7790-DC2OC-1GD5 the other day, and one of the features that's long appealed to me about the 7000-series Radeons is "ZeroCore". Re: Sandy Bridge, Part 2: Intel DH67BL & Asus P8H67-M EVO

Just a heads up for fellow DH67BL owners - some silly duffer at Intel mixed up the front and rear fan header settings in the 0156 BIOS update, so that now the front header BIOS setting controls the rear header, and vice versa  EDIT: wow, just noticed from the previous post date it's been a year...

Did you pick the 92 mm cooler model in case the 120 mm one wouldn't clear the side panel? I've got the bigger Noctua and the clearance is barely a few millimetres. Re: fractal define r3 - bottom intake - spare dampening?

The bottom vent on my Mini pretty much invited me to simply cut a thin sheet of plastic to size and slide it under the fan filter. So quick and neat if you're just wanting to block the vent - no need for tape or other annoying materials :)
