Re: Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme Plus GPU Cooler

Entropy -- So we should stick reviewing low power fanless devices that don't need our expertise for people to know they're quiet? Several counterpoints -- 1. everything changes. even silent computing and spcr. even a quiet computer was a challenge >8 yrs ago. today, quiet is not hard to achie...

What should SPCR review? (offshoot of Accelero Xtreme+ review)

I'm going to be a wet blanket and fundamentally question these kinds of reviews. This is, after all, "silentpcreview", rather than "NotAsLoudExtremeGamers". There are are more than 300 million Windows systems sold every year, no more than a couple of percent of which are gaming oriented. Those few p...

I broke down and bought the Corei7 2.8GHz, ATI 4850, 1TB version. That is, the highest performing and highest powerdraw version. It is significantly quieter than its 24" predecessor which I own and had standing right beside the 27" model for 2-3 weeks. I'm amazed, I didn't think it was possible. I d...

You sure do spend a lot of time assuming . Assuming everyone who buys it are hardcore gamers who spend 22h gaming everyday, assuming no one who buys a high-end card cares about noise at idle (which is what most people here care about, if you don't then you are in the wrong forum!), assuming only ha...

To you ;) No, to the majority . People want their cards to be quiet when idle, the time people spend gaming (even if you're a hardcore gamer) is a lot less than the time they spend doing other things. Not to mention those who leave their computers on during the night. So yes, idle noise is importan...

iFixit has a teardown of the 27 inch iMac. Six temperature sensors, three fans, surprisingly beefy heatsinking - this puppy should be quiet even at load for the low end config. The higher end configuration is another question - I can't really see how on earth they will be capable of dissipating all...

Apples new iMacs - even more quiet

Apple just released new iMacs and mac minis. They claim the new iMacs are even quieter than they used to be - which is remarkable since they used to be very quiet indeed. They go into the thermal design somewhat on their site, however they do not mention (nor could they, given the large variations i...

So is it going to be possible at all to build a "silent"/very quiet PC with a 5870? I want to make a new PC and desperately need it to also have 3x24" monitors so I can run EyeFinity (which means I'll need the power of the 5870). I had hoped so, but trandy1001s testimony left me doubtful. Anyway, I...

So, 1008Gflops for the 5750 vs. 960Gflops for the 4770 doesn't bode well for my hopes of 4770 performance from the Radeon HD 5670. Also, with the 5750 drawing 86W at load makes me wonder if ATI is going to spec a power connector for the 5670 even if it comes in under 75W at load. The 4770 has a max...

A reason why it is hard to find on shelves is that people actually buy them. They are the current performance/power champions, in short supply, and at a reasonable cost. Small wonder they don't accumulate on dealers shelves. I've had my sample since they were announced and could be ordered and I'm v...

Hello fellow silencing absessed ones :) Im looking to upgrade my pc this summer with a HD4870/90 or a GTX275 and gettin a large monitor for the sake of utilizing the extra power fully (my 19inch crt just aint worth such a strong card). I wouldn't cheap it out. the 4850 at higher resolutions and aa/af beats a 4770 solidly too. Uhm. No. I sidegraded from a HD4870 to a HD4770. I should know. Incidentally, I'm happy with that exchange at the same money . According to reviews, at stock clocks, a HD4850 is very slightly faster, at sign...

Did anything happen to the display when you lowered the frequency? There's no possibility to lower the RAM voltage? Nothing other than the screen refresh. However, see below. I use the RBE 1.20 bios editor, and it does not allow adjustment of the memory voltage. Encouraged by your question, I thoug...

In Catalyst Control Center, the memory clock is at a constant 800MHz, while the "GPU Clock" is automatically reducing to 250MHz. I tried moving the Memory Clock slider as low as it will let me (to 400MHz) and power consumption is reduced by 8 watts. So now I'm seeing 6 watts above the 3870 at idle....

OK. I have had the card for just under a week now. I side-graded from a HD4870, and also use a 7900GTX on the same system. Due to some problems with PCI-E x16, I have fiddled around a lot with the card, although mostly trying to achieve stable operation at full PCI-E speed - it kept going to x1 oper...

Prices are prohibitive though, particularly outside the USA due to the strong dollar (which is a rather weak argument, since most of the components and the assembly is outside the US). Wonderful systems from a noise standpoint, but my prediction is that their desktop sales will drop. Sharply. Very S...

Re: New Mac Pro taken apart

I have no extra insight yet, but the word from those who have taken delivery is that the system is silent. Not quiet, silent. Now, I assume that this statement doesn't hold for the people here, since harddrives are always somewhat audible, but the Apple cheesegraters have always been extremely intel...

Apple's OSX is extremely memory hungry. With 256m it won't feel snappy at all. 512mb is an option with the mini, as is 1gb. The last option is so hidous expensive that 512mb is as much memory any sane person would put in it. 512mb is ok-ish for OSX, but it won't fly. And the little fan is indeed fa...

That would be an interesting mod! Anyone know the peak consumption of these G4 processors? As for running XP on the Mini, as G4 is not a native x86 processor it doesn't seem that it would work. As measured by a power meter the mini draws less than 20 Watts, that is including PSU losses, unless you ...
