New Heatsinks
The Heatlane Zen has been discussed here before, but a German site just reviewed it again. What is interesting is the Thermalright models they reviewed it against. One is the Thermalright 947 (like a SLK900 as far as I can tell) and the other is a Thermalright with heatpipes. I found it interesting ...

The machine that has generated the truly phenomenol 10.3 PPD is: Duron 650 OCed to 848 256MB Windows 2000 I let it do whatever it wants (Tinker, Gromacs) because I figure both need to be done and I know that I'm not a major points contender anyway. Although I was one of the first to sign up for the ...

I do have another question for you MikeC. I have been trying to figure out from reading various posts etc. whether to go with a case with 80mm fans or 120mm fans. I'm going to be purchasing from NCIX and I live in Northern (read middle of nowhere) Alberta. This makes it hard to get any big selection...

Very interesting. Thank you very much MikeC. I knew that the P4 under reported its temperatures, and I did base my decision on the Processor Electrical specifications, however I did not understand the 25%/75% for the TDP. You have explained it well. I guess this means it's back to the drawing board....

I decided on the Intel route because for similar performance the Intel does not generate as much heat. There is no doubt a price premium, but that was the deciding factor. Unless someone can show me otherwise. The other reason I went Intel is RAID through the Southbridge. I'm going to be running two...

Thanks for all the excellent replies. The reason behind most of my choices is that I set a budget and this all falls within budget. Secondly I don't often upgrade, usually on a 3 year cycle. My current rig is a Duron 650 with 128MB RAM and a TNT2 card. Very rarely do I upgrade individual components,...

ZM80a with Abit IS7-G or Asus P4P800???
Anybody out there running a video card (specifically a Radeon 9700) with a ZM80 on it on the IS7-G or P4P800? If you are running it on the IS7-G have you replaced the Northbridge fan with a passive (ie. Bigger) cooling solution? I'm just curious if there is room on these boards for the ZM80. Any ass...

Thanks miker. What voltage were you running those fans at? What about the 120mm Panaflos then? How do they compare to the 80s for quiet. That might affect my case decision. I can find the IV's, but I want the performance increase to the 7200.7. They are supposed to be quieter than the IBM 60GXPs tha...

Well here is what I've come up with. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Sonata/3700 fan mounts
I think I have decided on the Sonata or 3700 for my new case but I have a question about the 120mm fans. I will be getting 2 120mm Panaflo L1As, but these fans are 38mm thick. The Antec site says the cases support 25mm thick fans. For the exhaust fan I doubt this makes much of a difference, but what...

Seagate: 120GB 7200.7 vs 80GB 7200.7
Conventional wisdom has told us that a single platter drive is quiter than multi-platter drives. I don't have any experience with this, but everything I've read at SPCR tells me this is true. Seagate's website, however, lists the idle acoustics of both the 80GB and 120GB (and even the 160GB) 7200.7 ...

Marc999, When ordering something from the states as you have found out you need to stay away from FedEx or UPS. Purolator is (IMO) ALWAYS the better choice, they are cheaper. Of course as other poster's have said if you can have it shipped via US-Mail that is even a better option. jgoff wrote: guess...

Hey Mythmaker, Have you tried simply decoupling the WD drives. I know they are loud, but I've had great success decoupling WD drives. They're still not silent, but it helps a great deal. You could buy a No-Vibes kit, or if you want a DIY solution, go down to Wal-Mart and buy some elastic used to mak...

It's not really that difficult to "tell" particular hard drives to sleep while others don't. I've set mine up like this. I've got two IBM 60GXPs that are my main (RAID 0) drives. And two WD 30GB drives that are obnoxiously loud. I decoupled all the drives but realized that the WDs were still too lou...

Nexus Power Supply Ad
Hey Mike, Maybe it's just me, but when I see the ad for the NX-3000 at the top of the page and it says > > 22 dB(A), the first thing that pops into my head is "Whay are they advertising that it is GREATER THAN 22 dB(A)????" Then I realized that someone in marketing at Nexus probably doesn't know tha...

I've got 7 panaflos in my case right now, all running 5V. I can't see why 8 is so unrealistic. 1 in the PSU 1 in the 5.25" bays feeding the PSU cool outside air 1 over the CPU 1 exhaust 1 over the video card 2 intake When they're all running at 5 volts you can't hear them and you need a little extra...

It may be enough to kill the PSU, hard to tell. It can depend on how well manufactured it is and how big the heat sinks are for how much air flow you need. If it is a generic PSU you can probably count on relatively low quality componentry with brute force solutions (ie. Large high speed fan). Mysel...

Anyone seen anything else about this, or have any experience with it? Thermaltake Duct it's over at ocworkbench. If it does what they claim (eliminate the spot in the middle of a fan where no air blows onto a heatsink) this may be extremely useful with a panaflo. Of course it's designed to hook up t...

Actually the Zalman 400W is available on www.sharkacorp.com . Although I agree with rpc180, most users don't need these massive new power supplies, as long as each rail on the PSU can meet the amps needed by all your devices. ie. A high quality 300W PSU may supply better power than a low quality 400...

Next, the Soyo board has a fan+headsink on the 645 northbridge, but removing the fan will hopefully not cause big problems since the Zalman cooling setup should hit it with some incidental airflow. Sapphire is making a Radeon 9700 Pro that comes with a built on Zalman heat pipe cooler. Meaning you have a completely silent card that the manufacturer SHOULD warranty if anything happens to it. Of course I'm with GamingGod, I'd put a 5v panaflo over the thing just in case.
