I have a similar configuration as you -- P180 with 2 6600GT cards and a Athlon X2 4200+ with the VGA duct removed. In that configuration, I didn't have too much trouble cooling my CPU -- however, my video card temps were going up into the high 60s on idle and shoots up into the 90s even while just p...

I assume, from your questions, that you are already running Windows of some type on the old system. If it's anything above Windows 3.1, I think, from your requirements, you just need to enable file sharing of the whole hard disk. More explicitly, it'd be: 1. Make sure the two computers are in the sa...

It makes sense, if you think about it:

If your CPU stays at 100%, it gets warmer, right?

So, with a more efficient driver that keeps the GPU working at 100% for longer periods of time, the GPU will probably get warmer, as well.

Depending on the type of duct and type of cardboard, the heat might make the cardboard "floppy" and make the duct deform. So, some duct tape to maintain its rigidity may be necessary. (I was using tissue boxes to make a L-shaped piece for a VGA card duct, much as Bluefront and Arctic cooling had don...

Does this carrying around require going up or down stairs? If not, why not buy a typical EATX-capable tower case and put casters at the bottom? That way, you can push it around instead of carrying it, which should widen your options quite a bit.

I'm afraid latencies and seek times have nothing to do with bandwidth, and consequently, transfer rates. Re: Storage without moving parts?

The flash will wear out rather quickly. You'll have to get Microsoft to redesign Windows to store data exclusively in the RAM (meaning no paging) and drastically increase the minimum memory requirement (to something like 1GB of RAM) to significantly prolong the life of the flash memory. Actually, M...

That's actually what the person in the thread you linked to did, actually -- the CF was used simply to hold the initial OS image, which creates a ram disk, installs the OS image into the ram disk, then runs off of that instead of the CF card. So, that's why the "less than a minute" comment was sorta...

One thing people keep forgetting about CF speed vs. Hard drive speed is: Yes, CF cards has about the same performance as a ATA33 hard drive in PIO mode in terms of max. transfer rate, since that's what the CF standard is based on. This also answers the first question -- CF cards look like a IDE hard...

Re: Making a fanless Pentium M system from a centrino laptop

Concerning the integrated graphics on that laptop... It'd be okay if for "3D" if you're not looking for high res or high framerates, but it's really not enough for most 3D games. Really should go for one with an integrated Nvidia or ATI graphics chip if you want decent 3D performance. As long as you...

It's actually slightly more complicated than that: Streaming is the ideal way to cool things, yes -- but it's also harder, since one would need to actually pay close attention to how the air flows and make sure everything gets some air somewhere. I think I figured out one way SpinPoints will die a horrible death -- overheating. Recently, I got an gigabit ethernet connection for my PVR computer sitting by my TV. Try using JB weld at the edges with the thermal interface material in the middle. It should bond a wee bit better than superglue.
