This thread is very entertaining. For the record, I have both XP and OSX boxes in my studio. The Wintel is the POWER rig in my signature, the G3 is an older model running OSX 10.2 (don't know the specs specifically). I won't try and make any new arguments, just count me in with some things that have...

You need this: http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/smartdrive2002.html I have two of them, both enclosing WD Raptor 10k RPM drives (one 74GB and one 36GB). If it'll quiet them down, it will certainly work on your Seagate - especially on motor/idle noise. Drive temperature stays nice and cool too, ev...

No (there is a huge discussion about it here). However if you call EAR and request "samples" of the bolts, they will send you some. They'll even send the grommets - just don't ask for too many or you'll get zip.

See this discussion for details and part numbers.

you’re far better off having a good quality 450W PSU rather than a cheap 600W PSU. Then why did they test the S12-600? 400W - 450W (as long as you are really getting all of it) is really more than enough power for any reasonable workstation, even with SLI. I guess I'll never understand the need for...

Ooooooh I want one. This is the answer to the hard-mounted drives, 80mm fans, and poor airflow in my server (SPACE). Two, I want two. Replace both of my cases! I might even be able to get rid of my SmartDrive enclosure in my power rig if I suspend the Raptor! Would be nice to have proper air filters...

I got the feeling he meant the extra work the motor has to do to get the platters moving without a firm surface to push off of. I know this causes higher temps, but is this really bad for the drive (assuming it is adequately cooled)?

Is suspension a good idea for extended use?

Here is the situation: I have a server with three drives in it (see the "SPACE" system in my signature). It is much louder than I would like, mostly due to features of the case; hard mounted drives, 80mm fans, poor airflow/turbulence, etc. I am intrigued by the new P150 case Antec has announced as a...

I've had a look at the pics, and the first thing I noticed was the smudge in the center. My best guess is that it is either a finger print or an air pocket. It doesn't really matter which, as both would kill heat transfer. Having that happen in the center of the contact point between the processor a...

I would start by (carefully!) giving the XP-120 a "finger test" while the system is on. If the processor is really 60C+, then it should be so hot you can grill a steak on it... If I had to make a guess I would say you will find it only mildly warm, meaning that the heat is not transferring from the ...

It has a battery which is charged via standby power on the PCI bus, so it does not go blank immediately. I never turn off my computers other than for maintenance and such anyway, so that isn't really a concern.

Also, I plan on making a bootable Ghost DVD image restore disk for it just in case.
