You're absoutely right. On further investigation the buzzing is coming from the Motherboard. It's seperate to the occasional squeak coming from the SSD. With this motherboard buzzing; I really don't know what I can do. I wonder whether anyone else has had this problem. I am using a Gigabyte X-58 Ex...

Yeah, my GTX does from 6300-8100. Same deal with the 511s.

Unfortunately it look like another week and a half before I'll be able to dummy-plug my 8800GTS 512 online. I can't wait 'til I get that beastie folding alongside the GTX; that'll be fun :D

I have 2 of them in my saved basket on Newegg at the moment. I'm going to wait till the end of the month for a few more reviews to come in. My music collection and multiboot scenario has made it necessary to find larger drives. I might just make a couple audio recordings at 1' while I have the work...

How about reinstalling over what you have, it won't change your work folder. I tried that and a full f@h wipe. No dice. I wonder if there's an arcane registry setting I can't find... Good news: I got my GTX280's shaders to 1674 stable. Should do nicely for PPD until I can get the 8800GTS 512 online...

That's nice to hear. My primary PC sits in the main area of the house and I've been looking to upgrade my drives. The price point is very good as well. Quiet is the key though. Seagate drives for me have been so hit/miss as of late. I guess it may be time to look at them again. That's been my exper...

So you already tried my method of adding -configonly to a shortcut and it still didn't work? What's the error you get? I get a blank DOSbox blink in and out. I'm going to just try it with standard for now. I might load up 2x standard later once I get 2x GPU working over the weekend (need dummy plug).

Seagate 7200.12 500Gb impressions

I decided to add an internal 500Gb to my recording machine to go along with the external 2 Tb RAID array. In doing my research I came across the 7200.12 drives with 500Gb platters. How useful! It's been my experience single-platter drives tend to vibrate less and have less spin-up noise, so I had hi...

Issues installing [Windows] SMP

I'm reloading everything on my folding machine after having been down a few days, and for some reason I can't load up the options screen for SMP. I'm talking about the one with the "-configonly" switch. Anyone have a workaround? I'd hate to not get credit for all the juice I'll be burning on this ma...

another part of the thermal puzzle solved: There is a significant airflow short-circuit in the empty area next to that used by the 120mm fan as installed by SPCR. Covering that open area (I used some scrap PaxMate) so that only the 120mm fan is open reduces noise and improves board + CPU temps notic...

Good news/ bad news: 1. the Dynatron side-exhausting is a resounding failure- ridiculously noisy on startup, gets quieter, but has the most unpleasant grinding sound known to man. Simple mounting mechanism is offset by horrendous temps: 58-74c-- yes this is a good mount with MX-2. Update: I remounte...

I'd like to see the dissenters get a GTX280, 8800GTS 512, Q9550 and 8Gb of DDR2 900 OC'd in their p180 quietly with air. ain't gonna happen. Q9550 is nice and cool anyway - comparatively speaking - as in: it's actually quite difficult to get that chip to overheat with anything but a major overclock...

To an extent, they are. I usually purchase based on need (I fold on our family computer, also my audio workstation), so general usage is my first priority. Next comes noise (mitigated somewhat by my H2o cooling hobby). After that it's cost/ efficiency. For instance, I know my current upgrade will ha...

http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=80445 WP, you're probably right, the argument above has been going on a while. I did note before than it seemed that the GTX+ used less power overall, but just barely. Yup. Same with GTX 260 55nm and GTX285. A half-node transition usually doesn't net m...

All of the 9800GTX+ cards are 55nm. Are you sure about that? I'll check the reviews cause I'm a nervous nelly. They are kinda pricey. :? Future GPU heads up

Looks like a nice PPW contender coming up: Nvidia is not kidding these days and it definitely wants to win the 40nm war. We've learned that it has an additional 40nm chip planned. This time we are talking about the card codenamed GT216 which is a 40nm chip with less than 45W TDP. This looks like Nvi...

Heh. The GTX is cruising at 5580 PPD on a 511 point WU as we speak :D If I knew for a fact that the one I'd buy is a 55nm one I'd buy it ASAP. Palit is making many 55nm cards, but they are not labeled. Idiots! You can find a GTX 260/ 216 55nm pretty easily, and many of themare labelled. the GTX285 ...

The other question is will the ATI cards also slow down with the 511 pointers or will they start running faster? That's been an issue since the beginning. Remember when all SMP units were 1760 points and flew by? And then the 1920 ones came out, and they take twice as long. Don't even ask about the...
