No Optical Drives? I've gone through 3 DVD writers in 3 years - everyone of them had something wrong - one didn't read all my CDs, one didn't read certain DVDs, one didn't write certain DVDs. And the drives are so much bother to install! So a year ago I bought an external AOpen DVD+-RW, USB2.0, and...

Ha! I'm watching it carefully - it's getting a little hotter - 64C max instead of 60C - and that's an easily acceptable temp. Very cool to have so much fine-tuning capability finding this balance. Thanks again.

P180 Success Story

Hi all, I just finished tweaking my P180 system with the help of the people on this board and now this thing is truly silent. I thought I'd share the final details of what I've got and what I did - nothing difficult by the way - to end up with this quiet, high-performance game machine. First-most I ...

Thanks so much for that ExperTool! Although the slider bars for Clock are totally messed up, it looks like going to Fan Speed and changing those settings doesn't tinker with Clock at all! So I mess with Clock via the nVidia drivers and fan speed with ExperTool. Thanks so much for the pointer! I foun...

Wow something has ExperTool really confused. When I set my 3D again with nVidia's Clock feature in the Display Properties, to gpu 392Mhz, ram 735Mhz, and loaded ExperTool, the slider bar for the RAM now runs from just 700Mhz to 900Mhz. What? Before it ran only from 80 to 150. That thing is really co...

I'd love to see a picture of the final setup on those 2 7800GTX's! I'm still brainstorming around how to get fan noise down a bit in that area.

I solved this problem.

I ripped the door clean off. It was already flimsy from shipping, I finished the job. I highly recommend it, it's better for airflow - and thus silence - anyway. Isn't that what you bought it for?

ExperTool Thanks Dennis/Robisoda ! Unfortunately the ExperTool also seems to want to set my GPU and DRAM settings, and it maxes out at 150Mhz for my DRAM. Is that Mhz before DDR calculations or something? In nTune the default is 600 and the max is 1000... . Basically I'm afraid of setting the DRAM ...

On the MaxLine III - yeah I was surprised (disappointed) to see how hot Maxtor's latest set of drives ran too. But they are reaching Raptor speeds, especially in tests where data density matters, so I guess it's a trade... .

Exactly! And even if you do have cooler drives you may as well get a fanless PSU in the first place - the placement of that middle fan is really excellent on sound. It's probably quieter for the same amount of airflow than a PSU fan would be. For the Antec P180 the real challenge is the graphics car...

Antec P180 and WD Raptor - Recommended Setup

I'm using an Antec P180 and 2 Western Digital Raptors. Raptors are rightly known for their heat relative to typical desktop hard drives, so I chose the P180 on what appeared to be a great wind tunnel solution. Well it is! I'm using an Antec Phantom 350 (fanless) in the recommended slot, and 2 Raptor...

eVGA GeForce 6800 I'm using this exact video card eVGA GeForce 6800 256mb PCIex x16 The heatsink is very small - this is a very low heat card for the performance. I'd actually be fine with the noise during 3D games too since they're pretty loud, it's when it's just idling that I'd like it to spin d...

Re Modern graphics cards and passive cooling - The GeForce 6600 and GeForce 6800 (not GT or Ultra - plain ol' 6600 and 6800) are well-regarded in the Small Form Factor world as ideal low-heat parts. Bringing that knowledge to bear in my P180 I chose a 6800 and this card is one efficient beauty. With...

I've got a P180 and am reading this and just brainstorming on problems and resolutions. First of all, I think something really original would be a case that exhausts air out the front. Video cards already push air in that direction anyway, so why fight it? The front of the case is always the side th...

Re earlier comment about some Raptors not making certain tell-tale noises - I've seen it mentioned over on StorageReview.com that Raptors have seen a lot of attention from Western Digital's engineers, and they're constantly being revised. I've seen this for myself, buying 2 Raptors 2 years ago and 2...

Reduce GPU fan speed?

I'm looking to reduce the noise from my graphics card without removing the fan - that seems like a dangerous operation. Is there any way to just tell the fan to slow down? I've got an eVga e-GeForce 6800. Not the Ultra or GT or anything, just a nice low-clock, no-extra-molex 6800. The fan is very no...
