Re: Silent 4TB+ HDD at idle

Welcome to SPCR. The most silent HDD is the one that isn't spinning. :) Maybe you can describe how you use the HDD - is it your OS drive? is it just for archival stuff? etc... The optimal system would use SSD(s) for OS/Apps/most used data and an HDD for archival data/backups. In Windows settings spi...

Re: turning laptop HD into a portable drive

Welcome to SPCR. I moved your post to it's own thread.

If it's a 2.5" SATA drive (HDD?), you can just buy a cheap enclosure that's powered via USB 3. There's a handful on Amazon that are highly rated and under $10.

Re: What is the worst thing that can happen if a PSU overhea

Before you replace the Grand Flex, maybe you could reconnect it's original cabling and hook it up to the mobo for control. See what the fan RPM is really doing/see if you can set up a low rpm profile. As you mentioned, it's a low wattage environment and any amount of airflow will keep the PSU cool. ...

Re: GTX 1650 Review compilation thread

It's not under your control, per se. If a card has a passive fan mode, it's thermally controlled. Let's say you boot up your PC and do some web browsing. It's a light 2D load and the GPU temps stay low. So, the fan stays off. Then, you start up a game, the GPU temp goes above 60C or whatever this ca...

simple thing: try temporarily attaching a thick towel to the brick wall and see if the noise level noticeably drops. If it does, then you can consider modifying the wall surface with something more cosmetic.

Re: Quiet down Ryzen 5 3600 in FD R5

Just wondering...is the rear of your case near a hard surface (eg: back of desk or a wall)? If so, you are hearing the reflection of noise off of the hard surface. Fixes are:
- move the case further away :)
- make the surface less reflective

Re: Quiet down Ryzen 5 3600 in FD R5

Arctic Silver 5 is outdated, there are much better options now. Check this recent Guru3D review: https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/guru3d-thermal-paste-roundup-2019,1.html "Much better" might be overstating it a bit. If you are a rabid overclocker/overvolter, then every degree C matters...but f...

You might try benchmarking the performance of an app you care about with PBO on and off and see if it makes a noticeable enough difference in speed and temps to make it worth it or not.

Re: Quiet down Ryzen 5 3600 in FD R5

hysteresis = fan smoothing. Set that to 5 sec for the CPU and 30 sec for the case fans for a start and relax the fan curves back down where they were. see what happens.

Re: Quiet down Ryzen 5 3600 in FD R5

It shouldn't be hard to quietly cool this 65W CPU. I wouldn't worry about the thermal paste age...and for 65w CPUs and a big cooler, there will only be a few degrees C diff between the best non-metal paste and the worst. If for some reason you still want to replace it, look at MX-4. It's a little be...

Interesting - is the performance somewhere between a 1080 and a 1080ti? The power consumption seems to be about like a 1080ti, or so. Techpowerup has a decent comparison of card efficiencies with their relative performance per watt charts at different gaming resolutions. From the same Powercolor re...

Re: Quiet, heavy-duty 17" laptop

Business user/corporate laptops tradeoffs: Seldom need a discrete GPU, so that cuts the thermal load in half. Battery life is king, so that can increase the size/bulk. Ruggedness might be nice from the IT guy's viewpoint, but a traveler would rather have a less weighty anchor in his briefcase. In th...

Notebookcheck is a decent site for laptop noise comparisons. There's the search page if you want to do a deep dive on specific traits.

Not sure where you are in the EU, but in Germany, you can get the 3600 LPX for ~ 105 euros.

If not that, go for 3200 over 3000.

Memory pricing is fairly flat between 3200 and 3600 speeds for some vendors, too. $17 difference for Corsair Vengeance LPX, for example.

Auto sensing mode = detects automatically if the SYS-FAN connection interacts with a PWM or DC-fan?
Yep.

Re: Hexagonal holes problem and CPU fan recommendation

Stupid questions: Is it okay if on Noctua page for my fan is stated that minimal speed is 750rpm but on my PC it is on 650rpm. Normal? No any kind of damage/problem for fan? Also for my Phanteks in BIOS I can set them to min duty cycle 40% (that should set them below 600rpm but didn`t), they are st...

Re: R6 Define - Improve GPU-Cooling & Use fan-hub

fyi - MSI has auto mode sensing in the BIOS (at least that's what the manual shows).

The D15 paired with the 65W R5 3600 is a bit overkill. :) Chances are you won't need to go above 500rpm on the cooler's fans.

Re: R6 Define - Improve GPU-Cooling & Use fan-hub

I'd suggest starting with the stock fans first with two front and one rear. Get a feel for the system and fan curves. Then modify as needed. For the case fans at CPU idle, set them at the min startup (probably 500rpm). Then, set a gentle slope to maybe 800rpm at 65C. Then, maybe 1000rpm at 80C. Set ...

Re: R6 Define - Improve GPU-Cooling & Use fan-hub

The mobo has 4 chassis fan connections that can be PWM or DC. Why not just use this instead of the case fan hub?

BIOS also lets you set the ramp up and ramp down time, so you can avoid any instantaneous changes in CPU temp.

Re: Gonna buy a 3900x which is the MOST silent fan for it?

Noctua fans come with a low noise adapter that lowers the rpm range.

CPUs don't "fry" any more. They note the high temp and throttle until it goes away. It's doubtful you will ever see a high enough temp to cause throttling.

Re: Hexagonal holes problem and CPU fan recommendation

I don`t think that is necessary to rotate the fans, that seems like a drastic change to me When SPCR reviewed the R5 as a gaming build , Mike found that having a bottom fan didn't add any value, but adding a second front fan did. Since you have the two Phanteks, it might be best for thermal and aco...
