One more thought....if he runs task manager/performance tab in the background while playing, you can get a feel for what may be bogging down game play.

Also, DX12 was made available for the game last year...See if that's enabled. It should even out fps a bit.

Re: Gaming Case

Have you looked to see what in the current build is crippling his game play? What resolution (1080p, 1440p, 2160p?) and quality level (Epic, high?) is he using? Looking at game benchmarks for Chapter 2 shows the GTX 1070 with a 29fps 1% low at Epic level and 4k resolution. His CPU isn't the limiter....

Heya.

Does the Ryzen 5 3400G have enough CPU horsepower for your needs? If so, then no need for a discrete gfx card.

Why not go with an HDPlex case? Small footprint, passive design.

AMD announced B550 will release June 16. That said, my recommendation is to wait until August or September to buy it as there are always high levels of firmware updates/bug fixes/memory controller tuning in the first few months.

70% of 32GB used for just desktop and browser tabs still sounds high... I'm running a game atm and have 12 tabs open in two different browsers, and an email client and other little bits going on and am only using 7.3GB out of 16GB. You might go into task manager/performance tab/memory and see what's...

Re: Time for a new rig

Wow, what apps are needing 64GB of RAM? A couple of things to ponder: - do you have anything that will make credible use of PCIe 4.0? If not, and going with AMD, consider B450 boards to save some $'s and have passive chipset. - this year's batch is the last gen of CPUs using AM4 and socket 1151 mobo...

Re: Time to update from 2011

Puget Systems does a great job benchmarking Adobe's applications. For Photoshop , the lowest end gpu is probably good enough considering the RX 5700 XT only scores 30% better (while having 12x the Passmark performance score) over Intel's HD 630 IGP in a worst case test. So, the MSI GT 1030 passive c...

Re: compatible passive coolers for Rx 550?

You might check with Arctic Cooling's tech support to see if the Accelero Mono PLUS is compatible. I don't see the RX 550 listed, but it's worth a shot. Your card has a 50W TDP, so the Mono's larger mass may be good enough to run w/o the fan. However, if you do need a little airflow, the min speed o...

Put a machine screw and nut in the slot to act as a stop for the rubber/silicone mount.

Re: Laptops with Large Windows of Silence

Welcome to SPCR.

I haven't been tracking laptop models. However, Notebookcheck is a great resource. You can use their search engine to specify what's important to you and it'll narrow down to the likely candidates (they've reviewed). Try starting with an emissions rating of 90% for quiet laptops.

Welcome to SPCR.

What's your monitor resolution/what resolution are you going to game at? That has the biggest impact on gpu performance along with where you set the quality tab (epic, high, etc).

Re: CPU cooling systems...

Welcome to SPCR.

Take a look at the Scythe Fuma, Mugen and Ninja coolers. They provide good cooling performance, are quiet and reasonably priced in many countries.

A more specific answer pretty much depends on the specific CPU's TDP and actual power use.

The site recently changed hands, so I expect my current support links have/will change. Order from your preferred e-tailer. :) External USB 3.0 drives are pretty cheap these days and have similar performance to SATA. So, if you are swapping them around between PCs, seems external might be better tha...

It seems like the reasoning is: you have lots of SATA devices, therefore go with x570. Can you consolidate some of the HDDs?

From MSI's product page... "Flash BIOS Button: Simply use a USB key to flash any BIOS within seconds, without installing a CPU, memory or graphics card." Note that this mobo does not have front USB-C, just 1 rear USB-C. So, if you decide to upgrade your case... 2) OC power pins: maybe. Here's a thre...

fans are controlled by the mobo. Some mobos have fan stop feature...or, you can set the fan value in the bios to a voltage lower than their starting speed - which is sort of the same thing.

RAM: When they list 1,2,and/or 4 channels for a given size of RAM module and speed, it's telling you whether or not the memory controller has enough oomph to drive the capacitive load and still meet timing specs for that speed. They don't list three because..it's called dual channel for a reason :) ...

Ah, your prices are CAD and not USD :) It all becomes clearer.

Don't have time at the moment to research B450 mobos, but I'm sure there are some threads in here somewhere. You might do a search on that or go look at Abula's posts.

Re: Time for a new silent PC? What to keep? What to replace? What to rethink?

Honestly, I think you'd be happy saving money and going with the 3400G and a b450 mobo, but what the heck - let's spur the economy. :) When you dump the gfx card and your PSU (yes, the PSU, too), the system will be damn quiet when the HDDs are parked. The only big heat source will be the CPU. So, th...

heh - seriously more text than I have time to read right now, but here's a couple of useful things to know. 1) Intel CPUs without the F suffix have integrated graphics. AMD Ryzen CPUs with the G suffix have integrated graphics. So the Ryzen 5 3400G does, the Ryzen 5 3600 does not and you'd need a gr...

Re: Time for a new silent PC? What to keep? What to replace? What to rethink?

Welcome to SPCR. Since your current system seems to meet your performance needs, it might be useful to benchmark it and see what might be the limiting bits. Then, you can decide how much added CPU power, etc. you really need. For example, The CPUMark score for your Phenom is 2576. A Ryzen 5 3600 com...

Re: Testing my understanding on case/build philosophy

That Le Grand Macho is a monster :) I tend to run the case fans off of mobo ambient rather than tie them to the CPU (don't think you have an option to run them off of the gpu sensor as it's data probably isn't sent to the mobo...) primarily as I like the case fans to have a very slow ramp..a fast ra...
