I notice that Newegg has something called a Thermaltake LANBOX Lite VF6000BNS for $79 which looks like you could mod it easily for a 120mm fan if you went with an external power brick. It would give you lots of room for cards, suspensions etc. (Or, rather than whining about exchange rates, you could...

It's an interesting set of findings; thanks much for posting this. I would point out in the interest of pure DIY that if you have room in the case to really suspend, bungee cord should beat all these in price *and* performance. 50' of 1/8" polypropylene covered elastic cord from McMaster-Carr will r...

This might be a good place to post notes on the Morex 3777 I got from Logic Supply to use with a VIA EN1200EG Pros: small and sturdy, ventilation holes match the fanless VIA mobo pretty well. Cons: zero directions so you have to figure how stuff fits yourself; power cable too short for this mobo so ...

Odd about them being restricted due to royalties, 'cause every time I listen to Pandora I end up over on Amazon buying backlist CDs. It's great at reminding you of less-famous artists. Given that most of the FM jazz and classical stations that I have available to me work from a very limited greatest...

I've had problems with the current software/drivers/bios on this board & overall the AMD/ATI chipset experience hasn't inspired confidence. I just posted the boring details on the TA-690G thread. But power consumption is good, so if power/cooling is a priority it may still be worth the hassle. One o...

You might search older threads. The Antec Solo is already solidly built and has some damping pre-installed, so you may not need any more damping (by which I mean adding mass to panels to change their resonant characteristics). And if you *do* need more damping, there are much cheaper ways to do it -...

I order stuff from Mwave on the 13th. On the 15th the charge for the *full* order shows up in my credit card records. But on the 17th they decide they need to wait for confirmation. mobo DVI plus single DVI card for efficient dual monitors?

1200x1600 20-inch monitors like the HP LP2065 are down to around $350 (post-rebate at newegg) and two of them would give me almost 4 megapixels. If I'm using a Biostar TA-690G with its own onboard DVI output, could I run one monitor off that, and then add an inexpensive single-DVI video card to run ...

Thanks to both of you for the advice and encouragement and for turning me on to nLite.

Been looking at notebook drives again -- 160GB may be the sweet spot right now in size and GB/$ terms, and the Hitachis look attractive for their ultra-low powed consumption.

Ok, a little more searching including this ftp://ftp.bookpool.com/sc/44/0789735644.pdf says yes it's a Windows issue but I have a fighting chance of making it work at installation if I have a disk with the SATA drivers... This is very useful. So I take it that without a real hardware RAID card, this scheme might not be a good idea. Thanks ddrueding1! I'm slowly wrapping my head around this. The advantage, to pick up on StanF, is that while you certainly increase arithmetically the possibility that you will *have* a drive failure each time you add a drive, the mirroring provided by RAID 1+0 (or RAID 10!) makes it much much less...

The list would be low power and noise, resiliency (the ability to carry on computing with one drive failure rather than having to do a time-consuming system restore from backup), and then GB/$. Four notebook drives in RAID 1+0 a desktop?

I'm planning on using the BIOSTAR TA690G which can handle four SATA II drives. I was planning on using two of these Western Digital Scorpio WD2500BEVS 250GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache Serial ATA150 in RAID 1. $190 each so $380 total; I'm willing to pay for the redundancy. But then I remembered the "inexpens...

I was able to look at one of the PC-A16B' cousins, the PC-V1000, today and it's definitely made of thicker aluminum than the older Lian Lis, but the Antecs are still a go...

What I was thinking of is called a P-clamp or "nylon cable clamp" and there are pix here: http://cableorganizer.com/cable-clamps/ Screw 'em to the attachment points on the HD; you could add a lock-washer to make extra-sure the screws don't work loose. Appropriate sizing should give you a firm enough...

I've had good luck with bungee cords, particularly the small ones that sell in packs of a dozen for a dollar or two. They can be very securely attached to the HDD with those little plastic clips that are used to hold down cables -- just attach the clips to the HDD case with the screws/holes normally...
