I don't think you'll see much benefit past 4GB of RAM in most situations. With the exception of video encoding, it is very difficult to max out the full 4GB with desktop apps or games.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've seen / done many stupid things to computers over many years, and had relatively few problems. Yes, there was one time when I upgraded a CPU and discovered to my surprise that my video card no longer worked. Never could trace that one down. But even when my friend...

Recommended P55 boards

Hi all, I'm planning to re-build my rig around a i7-860. I'm using an Antec P182, so I want a full size ATX board. I haven't seen any generalized recommendations for P55 boards in this forum, so I wanted to get some opinions. I had a bad experience with an Asus p5q-e and Q9450. I could never quite g...

S1283 for i5/i7

Hi all, I'm getting ready to rebuild my rig around an i7-860. I had a fantastic experience with a Xigmatek S1283 for my Q9450. Cheaper than many alternatives, and great silent cooling with the included fan. I was excited to see a new mounting bracket allowing the S1283 to be used with Socket 1156. h...

I have a Corsair HX520. Like others have said many times, it is by far the quietest item in my system. Even under load, makes no discernible noise. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for your detailed post. REally good info.

p5q bios update 1406

Hey all, I was having big problems with my bios on my p5q-e, so I downgraded to an old bios from June. Solves major problems (system will now pass Prime95), but still some lingering issues... now Asus (finally) released a new bios. Has anyone with a Q9450 or similar tried updating to 1406? Does it w...

Hey all, Thanks for the prompt replies! 1) are you overclocking? 2) what ram are you using? I am not overclocking. The ram I'm using is Corsair Dominator 4GB DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500). Have you tried going back to the stock bios? It may be a good idea to stick with those unless you're having specific pro...

Hey all, Wondering if anyone can help me. I just set up a new system with a P5Q / Q9450 / HD4850 / 4GB 1066 Ram / Vista 32 bit... just like everyone else, it seems. I have had a problem-ridden set up. Between adjusting to Vista and the shoddy drivers from ASUS, I've been though Hell. The only way I ...

IN case this interests anyone: I installed ATI Tool to stress test a new ASUS HD4850. It worked fine for a day, then broke. It would start up in the tray, but would use 100% of one CPU core and would never load the actual control window. I found after significant grief that exiting the Catalyst Cont...

Yeah, try putting as many as possible behind the mobo tray. This leaves the interior of your case free of clutter for better airflow. Honestly, I don't even understand how you're supposed to get a hdd cable up through the hole if you leave the psu area fan in place - won't you have to route the cabl...

IMHO, even with black bars on the side of the screen, your standard aspect ratio games will probably be just about the same size on the 22 as on the 19. Those extra inches make a big difference. I had a Dell 20in std aspect ratio, bought Dell 24 in widescreen, my old games still play at 1600x1200 (o...

Just a warning... I bought a p5q-e a few weeks back, and I've been having a rough time getting it configured correctly. Don't get me wrong, the board itself is great. But the bios/drivers/software are all very poorly documented, and work poorly with Vista32 (I don't even want to think about Vista64)...

Another question, when you put the right side of the case back on (behind the mobo), how hard did you have to press on the cables? Phrased another way, was the case side panel slightly bowed outward from the pressure?

Thanks!

If you want to save a few bucks, the P5Q-e has almost all the features of the P5Q Deluxe at $50 less. Also, the 4850 instead of 4870 would save you a pretty penny, and would be more than sufficient for "light gaming". The p182 is an amazing case, really great to work with. Memory and processor are a...
