It depends on which X264 encoding preset you use, and how speedy is decoding and processing of the source video. I encode in X264 2-pass mode "extra quality" which is only 1 step below the old 2-pass "insane" setting. If I use the new CQ presets speed boosts up to 2-300 fps, but I have less control ...

Perhaps was it the modding: to fit it in that case I had to cut off the borders, I checked that there were no wires cut but who knows... maybe with a rigid riser it'd have worked, but for the position the X16 slot has, you have to use a 1U X16 left riser and two X16 extenders to get to the slot posi...

ntavlas The SS-250SU I have is a Travla OEM modified version that came installed inside the case, but I think it is OEM only in the cabling, to accomodate the two 2.5" SATA trays and the 4 SATA hotswap trays, that require a Floppy power connector. It has a detachable AUX12V/Molex "modular" cable tha...

@bonestonne Slipstreams are difficult to find here, Enermax Everest series (UCEV8/9/12) are among the most silent fans I was able to find, apart the rotation noise (which is very very low anyway ) the good thing is they don't hum and don't produce vibrations, so silencing them with rubber moun...

@psiu About the HDDs Since uncompressed RGB24 HDV editing (1440x1080) needs creation of temporary files (to pass them to the MPEG2 DVD and H264 BD encoders) that take up ~400 GB/hour, a 2.0TB "swapspace" is the least I can have to edit at least 2-3 hours of footage without filling up the whole syste...

Didn't find any more pictures of this build, but I found some pictures about the previous build, in which I tried to use this same hardware for a HTPC, mounting two flexi riser cards to fit a discrete Radeon graphics card inside! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v129/dunk5.1dts/RACK3B/IMG_1...

I meant silent compared to what's inside, not silent 0 dB . Maybe for you it is "quiet", anyway for me it is quiet enough to be used even as a HTPC :-) maybe I'll upload a sound recording .
