Re: Old desktop - new build, simple upgrade or nothing?

Thanks for the replies guys! I don't have a specific budget. I'd rather not go over $1k. Lower is of course better. I just want my upgrades to actually make a big difference. The last few times I've upgraded it hasn't been a super night and day difference. I don't want to spend $500 and not see a pe...

Old desktop - new build, simple upgrade or nothing?

I'm considering upgrading my home desktop. The last upgrade was done about 2011 with a lot of carryover parts from 2008. My wife is going to be doing more work from home, primarily office & internet based work. So she'll be using some office applications as well as a small amount of photo and maybe ...

No, it really acts as though it is completely turned off. The device manager doesn't even list it in power saving mode.

I finally got the system put together. Its pretty amazing versus what I used to have speed and power wise. The system now idles at 58W in power saving mode (using onboard video) and in performance mode it idles at 94W. I haven't gotten to any benchmarking or stress testing yet.

Alright, that definetly looks like its the way to go. I did a bit of digging and decided on this new spec list: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5050e Sunbeam CR-CCTF MSI K9N2G Neo-FD G.SKILL 4GB DDR2 800 Galaxy 98PFF6HMUEXI GeForce 9800 GTX+ Rosewill RG530-2 530W 80Plus Bronze Certified From newegg's reviews, it l...

Thanks for the reply hybrid2d4x4. I know its not a good place for a gaming computer. I do testing and if things become too hot I open the cabinet for gaming. In the past I just had tons of fans running in it to keep things cool (still didn't work so great) and it was incredibly noisy. I'm definitely...

I also found the Rosewill RG530-2. Average efficiency of 84.1% vs the 330GB's 82.7%. Looks to be the same price currently minus the 330GB's $10 MIR. Anyone have any info on the Rosewill?

Thanks LodeHacker. Any suggestions on a descent replacement for around the same amount?

Any other suggestions at all?

I'm looking at possibly replacing the HIS 4670 with an MSI 4670. Its $25 less and has had good reviews. My only concern here is that the MSI doesn't idle down as low as the HIS.

power efficient light gaming build

After reading like mad for a while here I have refined my specs for a new setup. Its a multi purpose machine. It will mainly be used for office applications. However, I also like to game a bit, but not a ton. Planning on picking up Fallout 3 soon, and also keeping in mind future games. So, I really ...

The 330GB is the same price as the 350ET on newegg atm with a $10 instant, and $10 mail in rebate.

I was looking at the SeaSonic S12 II SS-330GB 330W. Its a bit more efficient than both of the others posted. Any other ideas? Are there any supplies out there that are around 300W and have 85+% efficiency?

efficient PSU for light gaming system?

I've been digging through 80plus.org trying to find high efficiency power supplies for my new build. It is a light gaming system that'll likely not need a ton of power. I'm thinking 350W supply would be fine. Does anyone have any good suggestions?

Do you have any other suggestions for a card that idles low, but has reasonable gaming performance? The computer is mainly used for surfing and office type applications, but I do enjoy a game here and there. I've read the 4670 alone is barely enough to play the latest games and was hoping for anothe...

4850 vs 2x 4670 in crossfire

What do you guys think about using 2 4670s in crossfire instead of a 4850 for a more power efficient gaming system? Price and performance seem to be pretty close. But the 4670 idles so MUCH lower than the 4850.

Hello, new guy here

I'm a long time overclocker who has settled down over the years and does less gaming these days. I've been enlightened to the many environmental issues around these days and am looking to reduce power consumption of my current system, and also look into a possible new system since mine is aging. I'm...
