Hey I'm in the same boat as OP with an ATI 4850. That Accelero L2 Pro sounds pretty sweet: any idea when it will hit the market? I found a random website that said June 09, but I guess it got pushed back? I would like to know that myself. But as they are handing out review samples, I guess it can't...

Re: My HD4670 with VF-900 and RAM sinks

I came back to spots and graphical corruption all over the desktop, although it hadn’t crashed. On rebooting I got corruption in the BIOS and desktop and any 3D app would crash very quickly. After checking various connections, things etc I decided I’d toasted the card and got out the credit car...

Re: Update

@Rogue I have since bought the system (Ph X3 720, HD 4770, ...), but thank you anyway. As I wanted a modular power supply, I went with a HX 520 which I got for $70 after MiR - not too bad. [grammar nitpick]: It is laid, not layed. The latter is too close to flayed for comfort, because we all want to...

If you are not in a hurry, the soon to be released Accelero L2 Pro would be an option. It's $15, compatible your card and supposed to be silent.
Sure, technically it is overkill for your card, but hey, it's only $15, inclluding a silent fan.

Accelero L2 Pro - $15 silent cooling for TDP <100-150W

Hello everybody, a review for the Accelero L2 Pro is out. Just the bare bones: Compatible to almost any GPU with a TDP <100-150W, including the 4770 9.5 dbA @ 1m in idle [*] 10.9 dbA @ 1m under Furmark load on a 4770. and that is with the included Fan. Pricepoint? $15! Comes with Ramsinks, too. I wa...

*checks*
Seems like newegg has been ramping up the prices on the Xigmateks lately - when I bought my 1284EE about 2 months back, it was $5 cheaper. Might be due to exchange rate fluctuations (Xigmatek's taiwanese, right?).

The Prolimatech is not compatible to the AM3 socket as far as I know.
The HR01+ is a good choice, see also the list of recommended CPU coolers on the main site.
Other optionsare the Xigmatek (1283 or 1284EE) or the recently reviewed Mugen-2 with dual fans.

Slight error

The "Specifications" Table, Item "weight: 870 g, 30.7 lb Now that's one badass heatsink  [Linux "units" says 870 g => 1.92 lb] Btw, in the conclusion it is argued that the mounting system is significantly more secure than the Xigmatek. Well, the Xigmatek is 385 g or almost one pound lighter tha...

I would suggest that as long as you are not doing video editing several times a week, it is probably much more economical to simply leave your PC on overnight instead of rushing out to buy new hardware.

How long do the tasks you want to do take with your current system? And what CPU are you using?

That Video card was good catch. Changing the power supply to smaller unit, dropping some memory DIMMS allows me to grab HD4850 and I'm still on my original budget. If it's no too late: You should also consider the 4770, which delivers essentially the same performance while drawing significantly les...

Forget about CUDA as long as you are not very heavily into video enconding. For playback (whether via VLC or WMP), your GPU is just fine.

Sorry, but that analogy for random acess times to memory is completely and utterly wrong. Is that the same fan solution you have? I'll give it a day or so and see if there is consensus. Yes. For the time being, the only card that does not follow the standard layout is made by XFX - but they have some very small fan on there, and IIRC someone wrote this solution is noisy. Why are you considering the 3870? The 3870 is maybe 20% faster than a 4670. You are looking at the wrong generation of cards. With regards to the 4xxx-Generation, I am happy with my 4770 - it is reasonably fast (probably ~50% faster than a 3870), does not consume an inordinate amount of power and I ...

There are some reports that a i7 can not be cooled by a 1100 RPM Nexus fan. However I am not entirely convinced that there are no other factors at play that configuration. You have about 15-20C headroom. So just get rid of those fans.

Any reason to use the 800 RPM slipstream instead of 1200? Fan roundup 5 says they both drop under 18 dBa at 5V, and it's got better airflow at their ambient noise level. None that I know of - I would have recommended the 1200s, too. More headroom when needed is always nice - and as you have a fan c...
