Re: Fanless system with ECC Memory

Alternatively, you can wait for the new AMD Opterons; according to the leaked info, there is a 35W variant in the new line-up, priced around $120. Availability expected before the of the year. Some thoughts from somebody who's in researching for NAS: look at the NAS as infrastructure; it doesn't has...

Re: PC in slim desktop case, need advice on components

The only credible low AC power readings are done with low power(<75W) level IV-V bricks and PicoPSU or equivalent; the EPA level categorization is similar to the 80+ ratings, requiring efficiency measurements @20, 50 and 90%, IIRC. Both level IV and V are rated with the efficiency over 80%@20% of lo...

Re: Silent speakers

Usually the cheap speakers came with en even cheaper power adapter, which is the cause of the hum. To verify the theory, unplug the power adapter from the speakers, but leave in the wall, and check the situation. As solution: if the power adapter is humming, and you'd like to keep the speakers, try ...

Your problem remind me something: some time ago I had an intermittent problem with a hard drive(PATA); the problem was a (barely)lose molex connector. So, did you checked the power connector of your hard drive?

Don't forget the Zacate's little brother, Ontario(the C-50 and C-30 processors); Asus EEE-PC: http://www.asus.com/Eee/EeeBox_PC/EeeBox_PC_EB1020/, full system consumes less then 10W idle, according to manufacturer. Now all you can find a place to buy it in Europe

Re: Silent and cool build with Habey EMC-600S and ASRock E35

Funny. The EMC-600B is back at newegg.ca! However, I think I'll go with the 800B for the added space and a (maybe) future SSD. It will be more future-proof. I'll use the 12mm depth fan onto either the Asrock or MSI (apparently, the Gigabyte seems to have problems with booting from USB.... thought i...

Re: Silent and cool build with Habey EMC-600S and ASRock E35

New scheme : Gigabyte E350 and remove the CPU fan Habey EMC-800B 120mm on top 2.5" SSD (to save maximum space vs a 3.5") or simply a USB drive Mod the metal tray (to let air go on the MB) as it seems to block the space between the MB and the 120mm fan Block the optical drive with a black cover (I'v...

Re: Silent and cool build with Habey EMC-600S and ASRock E35

Ok, I'll forget the Asus then! No real benefit from the passive coolong with the 120mm fan just overhead. From what you can see, do you think the MSI (here : Newegg.ca : MSI E350IA-E45 or here: ncix.com ) could be used? The fact is that I have a nice rebate for the MSI MB on ncix.com and cost the s...

Re: Silent and cool build with Habey EMC-600S and ASRock E35

I don't have the MB yet. I'm still into pre-research. But I've narrowed down to the Habey + AMD E350 APU, but I'm not totally set for the Asus Deluxe. I guess that if I take instead a MB like the MSI (which has a CPU fan) combined with a 120mm fan over the case that the CPU fan shouldn't spin right...

Really nice! I might do something similar with the Asus E35 Deluxe (passive cooling) of the Zacae platform. I'm trying however to take the black version of the Habey case (the silver looks too bright for my taste). Thank you; regarding the Asus board, I don't think that will fit with this mod, sinc...

Re: Kludge an i7 cooler onto a 478 Pentium 4

My preferred method to remove the white anchors were: take a flat screwdriver(~2-2.5 mm wide), and push the pins flat with the back of the board, then you can push it out completely from the black barbs with a small Phillips(#0, #00) screwdriver; then you can push it out the black barbs(last time I'...

Re: Kludge an i7 cooler onto a 478 Pentium 4

You should REALLY consider removing "the square black plastic anchor for the OEM unit" :P, since any time you can put it back(it's hold in place with some kind of push-pins/removable plastic rivets), and it can be removed/re-attached(carefully) without any damage to the MB or HSF holder. Regarding t...

wouldn't magentic levitation fans be even more quiet since there's no friction? IIRC, the maglev fans are Sunon exculsive, and I have bad experience with them: the KDE1205PFV2 which I have, it was noisy as brand new, some 92 mm(I don't remember the model#) in Acer computers(@job) became extremely n...

As my point above, I would like to see a higher quality, Energystar 5, power brick delivering 12V to the standard picoPSUs. According to the specs published by Mini-Box the picoPSU-160-XT ought to be the best if paired with a good AC-DC PSU. My PICOPSU-80 which I bought two months ago, came with an...

I've had similar problems with my ex-video card(Radeon HD 5750), caused by an improperly seated aftermarket cooler(by me :oops: );
Try to run Furmark, if the system fail, time to check the video card.
