Re: Fractal Design R3 cable routing question.

~16 or 17mm, depending on where you measure from. Some of our cabling/connector bundles extend ~20mm out when the side is off and they compress without deforming the side panel at all. More than enough room for the power cables etc.

http://labs.google.com/papers/disk_failures.pdf That will be able to explain it better than I can... some good charts in there. In a nutshell - if your HDDs are too cold or too hot they are more likely to fail sooner. I like mine in the range of 30-40 degrees Celsius based on my interpretation of th...

Re: Advice for Fractal R3 & Noctua Fan Cooling

I would suspect that your initial plan would work... two intakes on the front and an exhaust on the rear seems like a sensible place to start. We have an R3 with that precise setup and it does a fine job of cooling a Xeon server setup that typically runs at 100% all day and night. It's surprisingly ...

While this is probably not quite the way of doing it that you're thinking of, here's some interesting info re: oil as a coolant:

We have two Seasonic X-560s here and neither make a squealing noise - I can't even tell if they're on at all by listening.

Re: Build advice

I would like some advice regarding a "silent" pc. My goal is for a quiet, performance PC, with a good service life I'm not really into gaming at the moment, but may be inspired later. I will do some video and photo editing, and will run some resource heavy programs (arcgis etc). So far my component...

Re: Gigabyte 5770 Silent Cell and Fractal Define R3

The R3 hasn't blocked the air intake - it has a "moduvent" cover over the side air intake where the GPU sits - you can unscrew it and take it out to leave the vent open or attach a fan.

Haven't used one but in case you haven't seen the specs sheets, it does have a little bit of acoustic info on there: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-701250.pdf vs. the regular, very popular non-AV models: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-701229.pdf Ac...

Well, darn it all. Never come across this stuff in relevant shops here... Maybe try loosening the scews that fasten the harddrives to their slides, tightened screws them can reduce the effectiveness of the grommets. No 7200 RPM drives involved so far I guess/hope? Hm, I might try loosening the screws a little - something I hadn't thought of. There's only one 7200RPM driv...

Thanks Frenchie, but I think that things are more complicated with Sandybridge processors than I thought. Re: Server "Tycho" - Fractal Design Define XL w/15 HDDs.

So after doing a little testing... turning all of the fans in the case off makes almost no discernible difference to the sound level - leaving me with vibrations from the HDDs making the humming that I can hear. Putting one's palm on the panels you can feel vibration on the top/bottom and sides - no...

Foam is the first thing that springs to mind... What sort of case? What sort of sounds are you trying to dampen? Filling the case with light foam isn't going to do much for vibration noise... Also, while I'm sure you don't mean it literally... "fill" brings to mind unpleasant things with regard to a...

Re: Case with bottom PS mount that isn't full of holes?

Have a look at the Fractal Design R3 - by default any vents on the top and side are sealed with noise reducing materials. You do have the option of removing them if you wish. I tend to seal the side holes in the cases we use so as to direct the airflow front to back rather than front-and-side to bac...
