Proof of concept

Whenever the subject of going totally fanless (including the PSU) is brought up the idea is more often than not met with a lot of sceptisism. "If you can't hear the fans, why not use them?" and "It is WAY to much trouble to build a fanless system for it to be worth it" is the two most used arguments...

MSI Live Diva (780M chipset)

Last summer I decided to sidegrade my computer. Not because I needed to, but because I got the itch (well, aside from the PSU that is). Since then I've been looking for parts to put into my pet project and two weeks ago a retailer in Sweden got my motherboard, the MSI Live Diva MikeC reported about ...

The question is what is most important? To buy the cheapest possible psu (and signalling that price is the most immportant) or buy the best possible psu (signaling efficiency is most important)? Buying a 50 buck psu will never change anything. Paying a premium, showing the manufactorers that there i...

Why go crazy trying to get 87% (Aka Gold) efficiency at very low loads? At 50W DC demand 80% efficiency gives you 62.5W AC draw, 82% gives you 61W, 85% gives you 59W, and 87% gives you 57.5W. That's only 5W difference. At lower demand the difference will be even less. Is it really worth extra money...

Sidenote: 32 GB != 32 GB. With ACARD, you want to use the internal ECC unless you buy ECC memory, which costs more. But this consumes 1/9 capacity and leaves you with ~30541989664B out of 34359738368 that you really have. OTOH Intel, just like majority of storage manufacturers claims that 1 GB==10^...

I am, but like matt I'm concious of the power envelope of these chips. I'm primarily waiting for the X2's due this summer. I've seen reports of 45W X2 and X3 chips, though. That would be interesting, but that is still unsubstantial rumours, though...

Actually, the only perception offered, regarding AMD is "AMD is back on track" on all reviews and the only one saying different in this thread is you:) I may give the average consumer to much credit, but you may give them to little:) The average are interested in two things only. They are very cost ...

The second question the customer asks, though, is "Why is this system 200$ more expensive than that system? The GHz is the same, the RAM is the same, why should I buy this system?". That is when the sales clerk says "Well, you basically pay for the latest technology, the best worth for your money is...

It is actually worse than that. I am currently running an old modded Zalman 400B (with terrible values on the rails) which was meassured at 70-72% efficiency at these loads by MikeC in his review a few years back. It was actually rather good numbers back in the days, but those days are long gone. An...

What I don't understand is why that formula up there isn't ever used to calculate the power usage of the processor. Maybe I'm just stupid and don't understand what I'm missing, but to me it seems to be possible to get an approximate fix. After all, we have 2 unknown (PA and PS) and two formulas to w...

It's not obvious to me that the prices of the raw devices can or will drop as fast as you're hoping. Second is the 8-phase design of the P5Bs. Hi Tobias, Why the 8-phase design means more power consumption? Asus writes that it's for power efficiency. I don't know really. I do know that if your goal is low wattage, than you should aim for fewer phases. More phases is better when you want to make su...

First of all Welcom to SPCR :D I can see 3 potential reasons why your power draw is a bit on the high side. First is the discrete graphics card. That alone is a large chunk of your total idle power. To my knowledge, the lowest possible power draw comes from Integrated graphics. As my knowledge of In...

Aside from the GPU you have pretty much the same setup as me. Your GPU pull about 100W more than mine at load. Undervolted my system pulls less than 100W at load regardless of activity. During spin up in the boot sequence (no undervolting) I have seen the top power draw ever of the system at 120W. T...

SS is a high quality PSU. As it stands now, there is nothing wrong with it. It all depends on what you have in mind for your new system. If you plan on Phenom II and more than one 4870-like GPU with some extra storage, then I would consider upgrading the PSU. But as I said, if you stay with one CPU ...

The wait for the Vertex doesn't seem to be that long though. In Sweden at least they are available for pre-order and are deemed to be available on Saturday. The question is if one dares to buy one without hearing any reports regarding stuttering, or if one dare wait, as the discs might run out :P
