Have you by any chance heard Savall's rendition of Brandenberg Concerto No.5? I find the harpsichord portion to be incredible (a clip: http://www3.telus.net/shawn2/sample.mp3 )

Thanks for the replies. Strangely DTemp says my ST3200822A drives are 128.00GB in capacity, even though it's a 200GB drive. Anyway here are some read outs that seem relevant: ----------------------[Device S.M.A.R.T. status]---------------------- Attribute Value Thresh -------------------------------...

Re: BEWARE THE MAGIC MTBF ILLUSION!!!

look for accumulations of successfully retried read and write errors, which SMART firmware in the disk drives keeps stats on. SMART readouts, at some point, start suggesting disk replacement. it's quite unambiguous. I didn't know it was possible to do this. What software could we use to get the inf...

Re: BEWARE THE MAGIC MTBF ILLUSION!!!

if you monitor the SMART info from your drives, you'll be able to detect deterioration before it spreads and becomes fatal. if you quickly replace (and resync) the failing or about to fail drives, you should be able to get through the "mass die-off" with little trouble. Other than the tempearture, ...

Anyone running a lot of harddrives in one PC? If so, I'd like to know what kind of PSU you're using. I need as many as 7 in one machine.

Not only did my Enermax have coil whine, the noise gets worse with heat. I had to leave the case open permanently. Fortunately that problem is gone for the time being -- the PSU just died.

How many people around here are running a [quiet] terrabyte array nowadays?

Before I would think 1tb is overkill, but as I started to store and serve DVDs, 1tb is getting smaller and smaller, in fact it will only fit a few dozen or so of multi-disc movies like LOTR.

Radeon 9800 Pro with low airflow fan

Over the last year, I have cooled my GF4 Ti4200 with a 80mm NMB fan blowing on its side at 12V, which is not silent but I find it quiet enough for a gaming computer, and it's always stable. My question is, as I'm thinking about upgrading to a Radeon 9800 Pro, do you all think this same approach woul...
