Re: Nasty program called xVidly, how do I get rid of it?

Google showed me this removal guide. If it is indeed the same program then it's definitely Malware. http://blog.spyhunter.us.com/delete-xvidly-complete-removal-guidelines-of-xvidly-completely-from-the-pc Personally I'd try the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware first and see if it can do it m...

Re: Exquisitely sensitive stability testing - the linux kern

Would be neat if there was made a Live CD specifically tailored for stability testing a system, or just something that compiled a kernel like ten times in a row. Wouldn't even have to have graphics drivers for all the latest models as testing the graphics card is easy enough anyway. Finding out if t...

Re: Finally bought the define R4. Still not happy with noise

"Low rumble oscillating noise" could be if you have a couple or more harddrives that vibrate in slightly different rythms, where they harmonise every few seconds or so making it more discernable. If that might be the case, try loosening the drive screws(the ones with the big flat heads) a bit in cas...

Re: Windows 8: what do you think about it?

If only Microsoft weren't continously working to force users into the Metro interface. More system settings are being relocated there and the 8.1 update will, as far as they say today, require going into Windows Store rather than simply getting it through Windows Update like any previous Service Pac...

Re: Samsung 840/830 Firmware Update Today (5-14)

Those other links go to their online shop so I'd see it as fairly normal for them to lag behind a little compared to the support pages. Anyway, interesting to see updates even if my 250GB 840 has been so solid I just should not bother. But I will at least have a peek at the latest companion software...

Re: AMD ZeroCore observations

Perhaps a card BIOS bug even, unless a future driver solves it. The HD7790 is a new chip after all. My HD7950 has never had its clock speeds locked up over the couple of months I've had it. Haven't monitored the voltages though.

Re: AMD ZeroCore observations

Very interesting, thanks for the investigation. I'll set the Windows display timeout a little lower then, otherwise I've been in habit of starting the "blank" screensaver when walking away from the system. Will have to hook up a power meter to the system some day and compare. Most of the limitations...

Re: Looking for help to choose 3TB or 4TB drive

Yeah this 5900 RPM model existed before their coming out to say that 7200 RPM is the future for desktop storage. I hope it won't be short lived, even if I don't plan to get another for myself. Part of the plan with getting this drive was to avoid having miscellaneous software force several sleeping ...

Re: Looking for help to choose 3TB or 4TB drive

Gotten yours yet? I installed my ST4000DM000 today (after having listened to one on the day I couldn't avoid buying it) and the tone of the idling motor/platters is the nicest I've ever heard. Meaning that my ears don't pick up any of the high pitched tones that I have always hated, even close up it...

Re: Looking for help to choose 3TB or 4TB drive

The 4TB Seagate ST4000DM000 looks interesting at least, 5900 RPM and "only" four platters relatively speaking. I haven't seen any serious test of it yet but users seem happy with them, and apparently Seagate used them in external products before introducing the bare drives on the market. I would hav...

Re: Fractal R4 or other case?

Just a tip for the case fans. From my experience with a similar setup it will be just fine to settle for using the single rear exhaust together with one or two intakes in the front. The two included fans proved to be perfectly usable as intakes at 5V using the built-in controller. No ticking and the...

Re: New Seasonic G360 bad whining

I'm of no real help here but just happened to put together an ITX build with a G-360 and a FD Node 304 chassis. No whining in this build, but oddly enough while listening extra hard I noticed how a LED spotlight in the room was giving off a faint high pitched whine that I might have written off as b...

Is it becoming a little more common for PSU fans to be regulated by load percentage, or do the curves simply assume that the temperature will rise about the same in some "typical" setup?

Re: How to get cooler below 30%

It's not a given tha the fan controller could hardware run the fan any lower, and I haven't seen people being able to modify a cards BIOS other than clocks or voltages nowadays. It's unfortunate because with todays low idle power consumption and cooler design there are many cards that could turn off...

Re: Recover doc after Win reinstall

The only chance is to try to recover the deleted file, and a good free software to try with is Recuva. If you can, stop using that system any further and connect the harddrive to another system. Then scan it with Recuva to see what if can restore. The more a drive is used the more area of the drive ...

Re: Quiet 400-500W PSU for a very small Micro ATX case

Reconsider the Seasonic G360. While it only has one PCIe 6/8 connector( correction, 6pin only ) (by PSU standards it's not allowed to sport two 6's even if one 8 can deliver enough power for any dual-6 card), it's a perfect size for smaller builds, have excellent quality and runs quietly for an alwa...

Ouch turns out that that powerusage goes from 75-80w when idle to 120ish when playing any youtube videos  that's just sad... Mmm, every little bit adds up. Although there might be a bit of an anomaly there perhaps. Here the GPU clocks of my 7950 sticks to 300/150 when playing 1080p video in ...

I haven't toyed much with undervolting my own 7950 so far, but what software are you using with your card? A temporary "fix" could be to turn off hardware acceleration of flash video. I'm using the Chrome browser which doesn't (here anyway) seem to accelerate video in its recent versions. I'm sure y...

Re: Fractal R4, Antec P280, Antec 300

I think the question of health effects of chemicals is certainly important. I'd be thinking more about more modern chemicals like all the flame retardant in the case platics and whatever chemicals that the cards have been bathed in during manufacture. A lot of that will be leaking out over time with...

Re: Quietest mid-range card

My Sapphire 7950 (dual fan cooler with Boost) proved to be as quiet as reviews portrayed it to be, so I'd bet their 7850 is as good. Using their own tweaker software or MSI Afterburner would let you adjust the fan curve as well. Minimum fan speed on this card is 1150 RPM which I cannot hear from out...

Whatever smell might come from a brand new case with this bitumen-mix dampening should dissipate in a day or two. It's only part bitumen in there and there's a cloth covering the surface. My own Define R4 didn't smell at all which surprised me but my Define R3 smelled a little when newly uncovered a...

I'm well aware of what Haswell brings. I'm wanting to build an HTPC that can play Diablo3 acceptably, and hoping the GT3 graphics will allow that without a graphics card. It certainly should at lower resolutions like around 720p. Even with a decent amount of embedded chip memory I can't see how it ...

What kind of machine will you be building? Haswell is geared to be to Ivy Bridge what it in turn was to Sandy Bridge, primarily a development of the graphics part. TDP's will even go up a bit because of the more powerful graphics. I wouldn't be surprised if the release schedule for the desktop Haswe...

That CHIEFTEC BT-02B is a nice and very affordable ITX case if you could go without a separate graphics card. I've tested the HD Graphics 4000 part of my i5-3570K with Photoshop CS6 and it performed quite well with scrolling/zooming the picture around in OpenGL mode so I think it could be a usable o...

Their support is generally very helpful so they might be able to give you a figure for what the controller can handle. I would feel safe to connect two fans per header as long as neither of the fans draw a lot of power. For instance two fans of the same type that comes with the case, or equivalent a...
